Some help needed - Gary Bagshawe?

You may remember I covered this event during the summer and the local paper used the images. When I spoke to the editor he recommended me to the photo agency that handles all the images for the Herts & Essex group newspapers.

I'm being made redundant on 20th December (Merry Christmas from ntl:Telewest ) and whilst I'm job hunting I thought I'd better try and find some local work so as not to eat into my redundancy money too much until I can find regular employment again. I went to see the agency on Friday and it looks like I'm going to be doing some freelance work for them on a daily basis and I've got my 'trial shift' this Friday from 1pm - 9.30pm, covering all sorts of different events and stories.

I just wanted to know if there was anyone who has maybe done this before and could give me advice on what to expect, any pitfalls I might encounter and what to look out for.

Thanks,

Colin.

Re: Some help needed - Gary Bagshawe?

I have done work for an agency that supplies the local press here in Dorset and the best advice I can offer colin is to expect anything! You will be asked to get pics of all sorts of weird and wonderful things and the way I was encouraged to think was sort of 'middle of the road'. By that i mean that if they ask for a picture of the mayor, they don't want a head and shoulders portrait but they don't want a classic shot to han in his parlour. They want a picture that is actually not too arty but tells a story in some way.

The other thing is contextualisation: make every picture reveal something about the situation, the story, whatever. The mayor (to use the same illustration) opening a fete, cutting a ribbon, chatting to local people, etc.

The pics they want are often the mundane because they are illustrating a dull story. For example they are talking about the daily FT index (yawn!) so they want a photo of some money, a stock exchange board, you know the thing.

Anyway, above all, I wish you really well in it, especially in finding a new job for the new year.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Some help needed - Gary Bagshawe?

It is probably the best thing that has happened to you,
The best advice I can give is to expect to photograph just about anything!!!!
Make sure you have spare batteries etc and most of all "CALM DOWN"
remember to check iso settings and all the basics. Just remember the basics and you will be fine.
Also on each job make sure that you have a bagger, thats a shot in the bag that is ok. Then you can get creative and try other stuff.
Study the paper that you will be working for and see what type of shots they use for different jobs.
And above all else.... enjoy! Congratulations mate you will be fine, 1 day local agency.... next week National Geographic.

Colin, I feel confident you will never look back on this opportunity. Over the last year you've shown you have the business acumen to make a success of this, so I wish you all the best

Re: Some help needed - Gary Bagshawe?

Thanks for the advice guys, batteries etc will be triple checked on both bodies (just in case)! I've also just realised I need a map book for the county.

I've spoken to the chief photographer and it is going to be a busy day as it is Children in Need, do you think I'm being tested?

Dave, thanks for the vote of confidence!

Oh and just a quick reminder, remember to have loads of change in the car for parking meters.
Very overlooked but crucial.

So what's the plan Colin ? You going flat out for everything, or looking to concentrate on one of the areas you've picked up already ?

Much as I'd like to make a career in photography it's not going to happen for a number of reasons, mainly a large mortgage, two kids etc etc. In saying that I will carry on doing my equestrian events which are mainly in the summer, a bit of freelance work (if they like my pictures) and any weddings and portrait work I can pick up along the way.

As long as I'm still enjoying it that's enough for me, although a few extra sheckles are always handy.

Good luck with friday Colin, I am sure that you will find it exciting as well as challenging and look forward to your update after the event.

Children in need...hmmmm...nothing like being in at the deep end.
