Sound recording

Having put some AV s together using pic2exe, which ive now done about 30 its getting a little boring just using music etc for the sound, im wondering if anyone could recommend a sound recorder so that i could use this as well as music ive put a AV together using mainly photos took on the London underground and want to record the sound of the train coming into the station etc.
I dont want to remortgage our house but i dont want to use yogurt pots and string
On the music side ive now only got 9807 pieces of music in my i tunes libary
