Still Life Photography

Question: Are the majority of photos posted in the Still Life category really still life ?

Personally I don't think so. I always believed that still life was centred around a photographers ability to compose a photograph using inanimate objects. Where flowers are added it was usually for decoration. The art was concentrated on the subject composition and lighting the shot. Two photographers who excelled at this were Irving Penn and Edward Weston.

As for those photographs which do appear, I would categorise as landscape, albeit what I would class as "intimate landscape".

Re: Still Life Photography

Hi Ian

I'd agree with you. Most of the shots in the Still Life forum aren't still life. They're more wildlife / macro / landscape shots as you say.

I'd agree that still life should be centred around a photographers ability to compose a photograph using inanimate objects and the art concentrated on the subject composition and lighting the shot.

I wouldn't say it rules out flowers as a still life subject, but these would normally be placed and lit indoors. See my poor attempt at the fine art rose in that category for what I mean by the exception.

Guess others have a different definition.

Re: Still Life Photography

I too would have to agree with you Ian. What Chrisa said however, is also true. Flowers can very much be the subject to still life photography but some of the pictures in the current still life section would fall more under natural lighting then indoor "controlled" lighting. They are wonderful pictures and some very lovely flowers, but yes I would say some of them would be best suited when group under a different category. Maybe call it plants and flowers.
From my quick look at the current photos in the Still Life category I would say the one titled "A word in your shell like..."would be a good example of still life photographer for me. The "Snow Globe" on the other hand would also seem misplaced to me. Once again a great picture/illustration but not sure I would call it still life. My 2 cents

Could be a good idea. Or maybe the wildlife forum - though that seems to me to infer animals rather than plants.

Best stick 'em in the landscapes to get some action done...

Re: Still Life Photography

I suppose if the bear in question was stuffed it would fall under the still life category...

A Flora and Fauna section would probably cover most of them though.
