Stock Photos?

Just looking for some recommendation of stock photos sites to use (i.e. upload, not get photos from), and any to avoid.

Re: Stock Photos?

It depends on what you shoot and if you want to go rights managed or royalty free/microstock . I don't have much experience of microstock.

There are a lot of specialist agencies. For non specific stuff I am with Getty and Alamy. The former is generally more geared towards commercial stuff and the latter editorial. Alamy seems to have some technical problems since the new year so I couldn't recommend it until these are resolved as somewhere to "Upload to". I suspect that may not be for long.

Unfortunately, if your camera gear in your profile is correct, you won't be able to go with Getty as they have a prescriptive list of cameras they will accept images from and alas no uploading either.

Re: Stock Photos?

Be aware that they are all microstock sites on that link. Whether you go microstock or macrostock is one of the key decisions to make, hence the question about what you intend to shoot, the two markets have different emphases and different income models.

I'm mostly looking at landscapes, since there are so many around me.

Re: Stock Photos?

If I were you I'd have a chat with Vinny, as Getty would be your long term goal, Alamy in the meantime, and avoid the microstock sites. Try www.stockimagingforum.com and Stock Photography, Royalty Free Images & Licenced Stock Photos | Alamy Images forums and ask there.

You could be up and running on Alamy within days, so I would start there. You will have questions about image size and workflow so if you need any help, let us know. Alamy deliberately make it difficult to understand the instructions (IMHO it's their last barrier to entry) so don't be afraid to ask.

Andy
