I am doing Street photography for my latest project, does any one have any tips on which lens it would be best to use?

Re: Street Photography

What kind of subjects did you have in mind and were you thinkinhg of candids or impromtu portraits? A telezoom will let you fill the frame without getting too close but wil have a narrow DOF which may not put your subjects in context. 35mm was popular on 35mm SLRs so on a DSLR 20ish would be a place to start. A good quality standard zoom would be my choice for most work.

If you want to interact and go the posed portrait way then a mini album to show people the kind of thing you are trying to achieve can work wonders. This doesn't have to be your work but it helps if it is.

Re: Street Photography

For people photography :-

If you have the balls to go up to people & ask if you can take their photograph, then 50mm is a good focal range. If you feel a little shyer then a decent focal length of say 200m+ will allow you to sneak a few candids. I've also seen some wicked shots taken with a 20mm focal length, but the photographer nearly had the lens touching some of his subjects

I would recommend going with option 1, as you will always end up with a better shot if you have some control over it

Let us know how you get on

I don't know what you mean, Dave.

As it happens, I know someone who has got one of those knives, but I'll keep quiet. (for once)

Re: Street Photography

'street photography' can mean a lot of things,. my advice is to try this,. get a disposible point + shoot film camera - the real cheap ones with 400asa speed film,. walk round in a fairly busy place and take pictures of ppl you don't know,.

if you have asked someone if you can take their picture you have probably missed the boat,. unless you wait for them to forget about you which they might if they are busy doing something
