Submitting photos for sale to Newspapers

Hi All
I am a new member of Pixalo -great forum!
I wanted to enquire if anyone knows the correct procedure for submitting images for publication in an online paper - e.g. Guardian Unlimited.

I am not a pro but neither a complete beginner either and so, if possible, I would like my photos to be considered for purchase, rather than just contributing to a readers gallery.

I have researched this online and found links to email addresses for picture libraries at a number of publications, but wanted to know if anyone had any tips to make the submission more professional / likely to be considered - i.e. not make rookie mistakes.

Any advice much appreciated thanks.

JP

If they are anything like local papers, you will be lucky to get a credit. You can try, just email a watermarked shot to the picture editor, but if they have got staff out covering or can get the image from an agency, you won't get used.

Re: Submitting photos for sale to Newspapers

I have no first hand experience with selling photographs to newspapers but did attend a lecture from someone who did break into this. I would think that you need to specialise in something so that you can readily offer a particular type of picture. The guy who lectured went to a local sports club and spoke to the manager of a up and coming athlete and eventually secured exclusive rights to photograph him in training. As the athlete later won an Olympic Gold medal, his images were in great demand and a Newspaper evenentialy gave him regular work in sports photography and bought him a new camera. I think it took him several years to become established. best of Luck!

Re: Submitting photos for sale to Newspapers

hi everyone
thanks for your quick replies. thought I had some decent shots of hampstead heath in the snow that may have been of interest, but, understandably, press have a ton of great images from their staff/agencies that they can use. figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

Re: Submitting photos for sale to Newspapers

I used to sell a lot of pictures to local papers (and some to the nationals ) and I spent a few years on the other side of the fence, as an editor, mostly not buying pictures from hopeful "freelances".

The best advice I can give is the old chestnut: faces sell papers. What an editor wants is clear pictures of lots of people, with their names spelt correctly and a good reason why other people would want to read about them. Pretty pictures of snow are only interesting if (a) they're spectacular and (b) it's a slow news day. Mind you, I once sold three shots of snow in Devon to the Evening Standard and they ran them over most of page three. Must have been a reeeaaally slow day!

I'm not sure that it's possible to make a decent income from local press work these days, not like I could in the 'seventies when I could double my income by spending Saturdays running around all the fetes, jumble sales and flower shows in the area.

Still, don't let me put you off, just be aware that you need to find out what the editors want and supply it; not try to sell them pretty, or worse, artistic pictures.

Re: Submitting photos for sale to Newspapers

Make sure you now what the paper reports on and what subjects are covered the most, but most papers have everything covered and now with digital any person who already works for the paper will go out and take a picture..I would imagine you will find it very hard to sell a picture to a newspaper let alone work for one! best of luck...
