Sunset portraits

Hey all, with summer well and truly on its way my mind is heading to out door portraits and most definately sunset portraits.

It is always one of the most striking images a properly exposed subject with the sun setting in the background.

How many of you have attempted this and either won or failed? And where did you go wrong if you failed?

Re: Sunset portraits

Other than composition and WB the main problems are overblown highlights and too dark shadows, meaning vast expanses of shadow with no detail.

Re: Sunset portraits

Yep - fill flash is pretty much essential.

Re: Sunset portraits

We've taken late afternoon beach shots, so sun getting low - but definitely not dark enough to need any flash

Re: Sunset portraits

I only ever try this when I'm on holiday thats when I use my compact a lot, I use the setting thats marked on the camera you know the portrait setting with little stars in the background and sometimes it works other times it dont............all I know is that you use a slow shutter speed and flash, I suppose if you want to do it properly then the camera should really be on a tripod.....its still requires a slow shutter speed and flash! I am now finding that I use my compact less and less, compacts really do make you idle!
