re: Taking photos in public - know your rights

This is the only country in the world where I worry about taking pictures in public its only a matter of time before I will get done, but this is not a new thing I was being stopped 30 years ago when I used to do a lot of night photography for some of the lectures that I used to do, I am so carefull now what I photograph and it takes a lot of fun out of photography which is now just a hobby to me! in my retirement years....

There is also some audio from the Jeremy Vine show today. 14th Dec.

The Chief Constable seems to be failing to get his message down to the rank and file (or they choose to ignore it).
About 1:45 into the programme

Re: Taking photos in public - know your rights

I've found, over the years that...
  1. Most coppers are good blokes.
  2. Those who aren't, won't be told.
  3. Never give a bad copper an even break.

Always make an official complaint if a copper steps over the line. It's the only way to make sure that the service remembers that it can only police with our consent.

Re: Taking photos in public - know your rights

This is all so sad.Jumped up security guards/community wardens acting like something out of 1984 is a case of the 'loony's taking over the asylum'[Not all security guards/community wardens act like this of course].Thats bad enough but to have so many instances of police officers acting in the same manner is very worrying. These people,of course, take their cue from the all the scarey legislation passed in the name of protecting our democratic rights !!!.Some Democracy, some rights.Would be funny if not so serious.
I know a recently retired old fashioned 'beat bobby' who used to despair at the quality, and commitment,of new recruits into the force and I won't mention his view on the 'standard' of some of the wardens.

Re: Taking photos in public - know your rights

These post always make me review whats the rules in Oz - good summary here for anyone from Down Under

Legal Information : Street Photographers Rights

I'm not aware that we encounter these issues much _ I never have but then how many cops suspect some near middle aged woman of being up to no good? !

Re: Taking photos in public - know your rights

Strange things happening in the UK.

I took pictures in Beijing, sometimes using a tripod or including police officers, and no one said anything. I did not take a picture when the police were arresting a protester though. We were not even part of a tour group.
