Technique for fireworks needed!

HI EVERYONE,

Today is Canada Day and of course there will be some fireworks tonight.
Although I have made a few attempts to photograph them in the past, the fireworks very seldom turn out great.

I thought I saw a post/thread, regarding which technique to use, here a while ago but I cannot find it.

I know just the basics: tripod, small aperture, speed???, anyway, any help would be welcome!
Cheers.

JP

Thanks P-E!
I found out about using the Black Card but I am not so sure.
Would you also recommendblocking out the vieewfinder because I am told some rear lighting can actually be a problem ... ?

Re: Technique for fireworks needed!

Markulous, I ... don't believe you messed any pic for a great while!?!?

OK, let's get real: Are these basics sufficient:

Tripod
Remote release
Focal length wide and zoomed in a bit for a few pics
Aperture f8 to f16
ISO 100
Exposure: long (up to 5 secs + and/or use BULB for the duration of a "burst")
Manual focus
No anti-shake systems turned on

???

Anything else?

Re: "Manual focus", I could be wrong (never having shot fireworks) but I'd think it best to pre-focus at infinity, rather than try to fiddle about with manual focus while the fireworks are actually going on

I'd say so (tho never having successfully shot fireworks, that being the first and last time, I can't be sure!). Might add:
chair to sit in waiting for the start
umbrella (on standby?)

hey,

just been reading through this as I am going to an event tomorrow night that will have lots of fireworks.

I notice a comment above that I should use manual focus. How will this work? How will I know where to set the focus ring??
