Re: Teleconverter

I would have thought that either will do the job and the Nikon is likely to be dearer.

Have you considered the Nikon 1.7x converter?

Ken Rockwell gave it a good review. It is dearer than the 1.4x, but you can get them used for reasonable money. You loose 1.5 stops.

Re: Teleconverter

I use a Kenko 1.4x and I'm satisfied with it optically (a lot of my macro images are taken with it and my Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro lens) but if it drops your effective aperture below f5.6 you could have problems with your auto focus.

Re: Teleconverter

Likewise, I have put up a couple of shots with the Kenko x1.4 + macro. Image quality seems fine. The TC is not weather sealed like the later Nikon TCs (as pointed out by VinnyP in an earlier post), but then the 300mm isn't either I think. The Kenko TC will work with screw-drive focus lenses whereas the Nikon TC only works with AF-S/SWM lenses as far as I know. Graham has a point about the Nikon x1.7TC. A friend uses this combination on his D300s without problems, and that will give just over 500mm at an effective max aperture of f/6.3. This suggests that auto-focussing will work as he uses his camera mainly on the simplest settings, and very rarely uses manual focus.

No worries about the Kenko TC touching the rear element - there isn't one at the back of the 300. The 80-400mm has a rear element that is flush with the mount, and before I used the combination, with the lens vertical, I put a 2mm bead of water on the rear element, zoomed in a little, then attached the TC and zoomed out. The bead of water was not even touched so there is definitely plenty of clearance, should you want to try other lenses. Again I believe that Nikon TC's will touch the rear element of some lenses.

Optically the Nikon x2TC III is reckoned to be the best but the price is also high.

Re: Teleconverter

I'll add another vote for the Kenko. We've 2 x 1.4TCs (even used them both on my 500 with great results) - and binned the Canon equivalents due to having same IQ and Canon wouldn't fit some lenses)
