which teleconverter do i buy !

Hi everyone
I am buying myself a canon 100-400 ef is lense for my 350d. i like wildlife photography, particulary birds. my question is about teleconverters, i know that you loose some quality and light, but i want to make my lense a little more versatile. i dont know weather to buy a 1.4x or a 2x or both and also weather to stick with canon or if there is an equivelant make at a better price. i do use a tripod although dabhand meantioned a monopod! i also was going to get a battery pack to add weight to the camara, is this a good idea! also has anyone got some sample photos i can look at using this equipment so i know what is posible. your thoughts and ideas would be very welcome.

regards Dave Home

Re: which teleconverter do i buy !

You'll lose Af with your camera and that lens combination with a 1.4X converter. 1 stop lost for a 1.4x and 2 stops for a 2x so at full zoom the 100-400L becomes a f5.6 which is the limit for AF on non pro bodies..add on the 1 stop for 1.4x and you'll probably have instant AF issues in anything other than excellent light, and even then there is no guarantee it will work. I guess it depends if you usually manual focus or not but I would say, either way a 2x is really not an option for that kit, sorry.

EDIT..all the above is irrespective or make or brand of teleconverter...its due to limits of the camera body and lens combination.

Re: which teleconverter do i buy !

I just recently bought the 100-400L IS and was almost buying the 1x4 tc to go with it, Handholding it with the IS great but losing the AF or IQ did not appeal to me, fiddling about trying to manual focus is not what I wanted while handholding. Other reason is folk saying you lose IQ with one, well if I am spending almost a grand on a quality bit of glass why do I want to degrade that IQ by spending a extra 180 quid on a TC for a few extra metres. If 400mm is not a long enough reach then maybe a longer lens would be better and retain the IQ.
As for battery packs, do they help steady the camera a little against camera shake? Adding weight to the camera in the form of a battery pack seems to me making things hard for yourself, Personally I'd rather just carry spare batt's in my bag. A camera and long lens is heavy enough to carry around on it's own without adding 2 extra batts etc.

You'll love the 100-400 by btw, I've just posted some pics in the Photo Sharing section under Edinburgh Zoo all taken with the above lens. I've seen better but then I'm still learning this game.

Re: which teleconverter do i buy !

Take a look at some of my shots - I use a 100-400mm with/without a 1.4x or a 300mm f4 IS with/without 1.4x. You lose AF with the 100-400 (unless you tape the contacts) but since I mainly use manual focus anyway, I'm not fussed in the slightest

Concensus is that the 2x does give a drop in quality - personally, I see little difference with the 1.4x

Insofar as battery pack or none, I find the balance way better with the power grip despite the extra weight - but then I tend to use a mono/tripod wherever possible

Re: which teleconverter do i buy !

I used the 350D & 100-400L IS combination for quite a while (many of the shots in my gallery were taken with them), and while I cant comment on the t-con situation as I never went for one due to not wanting to lose autofocus I can reccommend getting the BG-E3 battery grip, I found it transformed the feel of the camera for the better and also provided better balance when using a heavier lens. Definitely worth looking at.

I hate battery grips. Might as well strap a brick to the camera. But I'm in the minority.

Silky, is that an accrington or common house brick, and does it matter about colour.

Re: which teleconverter do i buy !

I've been looking at teleconverters as well - for Nikon, but my comment should apply to Canon/other as well (I think) ... and have settled on getting a 1.7x whereby you lose 1.5 stops (a happy medium I think) and the Nikon one is very compact + lightweight compared to the 2x one; not sure if this relates the same way in the Canon world though, but if it does, you could use two of these for a really good reach (but lose 3 stops of light).

Losing AF could be tricky for wildlife shots, especially birds, which you say is your 'thing', so that might be a strong consideration for you if you use a teleconverter with the lens you mentioned.
