Teleconverters 2

Well I took the plunge and got a Kenko Pro 300 1.4 converter so I thought I would post a couple of shots uncropped and then tight cropped to give an Idea what you get with them. My local reserve has lots of birds but mostly at a distance hence the reason for getting a converter. But to be honest no focal length is ever enough. Not razor sharp when cropped hard but certainly sharp enough for record shots

First one is a Green plover, Lapwing, or Peewit, call it what you will.
The second bird is an Avocet

Re: Teleconverters 2

Warehouse Express. Chris didn't post until after I ordered it. Took 16hrs to get to me.

This will make you laugh, here's my rig this afternoon.
Got a cheepo "G" cramp for £5, bolted a bit of angle iron to it, drilled 1/4" hole in it then fixed a ball and socket head on it - hey presto, a rock solid hide clamp
I use an electric cable release as a 2 second timed delay is too slow for birds

Re: Teleconverters 2

Some pretty good results!
A pretty good rig - whatever works is what I say! (until someone leans against the frame which jiggles the lens!)
An unpretty lens (but no worse than the irritating L colour!)

BTW, providing you got the PRO300 DG or DGX (the X is just the newer release but otherwise no different), you got the best of the bunch

Re: Teleconverters 2

Unfortunately people are the main problem, even on a tripod the thing vibrates when people walk across the floor.

Unpretty lens! Wash your mouth out! Critics don't like the colour, don't see many objecting to white Cannon lenses or anyone complaining that Sigma black lenses distort in the heat which is the reason Cannon say they make theirs white. I suspect the main reason is branding

Re: Teleconverters 2

looks like that converter is working well with your setup, nice collection of shots. Like the idea of the rig set up for the hides.

Not tried shooting from hides as yet, but may do soon, as i have just taken delivery of my new lens Sigma 150 -500 which cant wait to get out and try

Actually quite a few Canonistas dislike the white lenses - but far more use them to pose!

BTW, where were your shots taken? We're after seeing Avocets before they all disappear again for the summer

A lot of good info going on lately. I'm more lucky then good when it comes to finding good information on the web. Very interesting colors in your #2 crop.

Re: Teleconverters 2

Thanks for the comments guys
The colours on the plovers can be gorgeous in the right light.
The Avocets have only just arrived. These were at North Cave Wetlands reserve which is in glorious East Yorkshire my homeland. There were about 20 yesterday.
The best place by far to photograph them in this area is at RSPB Blacktoft Sands which is near Goole but be careful I've always been told never to get caught by the goolies. I risked it today and was told they counted 70 pairs of birds. Also 5 Marsh Harriers hunting most of the day but always some distance away.

Re: Teleconverters 2

Thanks for that! We might just risk East Yorkshire (and this is a risk, bearing in mind we'll be coming from Lancashire! )

Re: Teleconverters 2

Just been on Google Earth and realised I could take a measurement of the distance the birds were from me on the images. First one was 35m, the second 55m. Equivalent focal length in 35mm would have been 840mm
