Re: Teleconverters

I have an old promaster spectrum 7 2X that works good up to about 200mm. After that you notice the quality drop. It works OK for my 100 macro lens but leaves a green and megenta fringe if you look for it.
When ever it's on my camera I must use manual focus, all the tricks work but cause a search to no end when bye passing the contacts. I also have the canon 1.4X which works good with better quality, but then again I must use manual focus as I don't use the top of the line camera. There is no fringe with the 1.4X canon. I have looked around and I'm thinking about the newest sigma 2X. I have heard all the noise about the 2X on the 100-400L that I use, but it's the best I can do. If something turns up on this thread I might pick it up. I love a 2X on my telephoto lens, Thanks for posting Jake.

Re: Teleconverters

This was taken hand held with a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L with a X1.4 teleconverter, all that happens is you lose 1 stop aperture with a 1.4x and 2 stops with a 2x converter and your aperture needs to be above f5.6 to retain auto focus unless you are using a pro camera.

Every time I've hired a decent lens I've grabbed a converter too just to get used to the different combos, I've not had an issue with any of them.

I used to use the Canon 1.4 telex with the 300mm for cricket which I was fairly happy with.....

Re: Teleconverters

Thanks guys. I was considering buying one but there are a lot of horror stories around but there again I wondered whether that was down to the lens or people expecting to use a very long lens like a standard lens.

Re: Teleconverters

I'll add another note of support for a 1.4x TC. Don't use it that often but it's very useful when I do - I use the Kenko PRO 300 1.4x having had the Canon one (which I sold on as no better quality and it couldn't be used across all my lenses)

Re: Teleconverters

Now that is useful Mark I had been wondering about Kenko as they are quite a bit cheaper than a Sony which still would not give autofocus on my 400mm. I am specifically looking at my gear for Bempton seabirds, the season will soon be with us.

If the 400mm is f/5.6 then a TC will take it up to f/8 when AF will not happen whatever your TC - unless you've a pro camera or tape up contacts (only know this to be effective in the Canon 100-400mm)

Yup, you can buy 2 x Kenkos for the price of a Canon (so not surprised if that's the case with the Sony)

Re: Teleconverters

Will the sigma 2X fit more canon lenses verses the canon 2X ?
Is the kenco as good as the sigma 2X, I have heard some good about the sigma.
I find that if I'm going with a converter I might as well put the 2X on, the 1.4 never seemed to have the reach to justify manual focus. If I put eye drops in my eyes for two days ahead of time, I can actully see what I'm trying to manually focus on.

Re: Teleconverters

I have just purchased a Kenko PRO 300 x2 Sony fit, was hoping i would get away with AF on my 70 -300mm F4.5-5.6 lens, but unfortunately it doesn’t, the lowest setting i get is F11 with the converter attached. so all shots at the higher magnification range will have to be done in MF and definitely on tripod only, thought i had steady hands until now .

The AF function works fine on my other lens, Tamron 17-50 F2.8, 90m F2.8 and Minolta 50m F1.7

Re: Teleconverters

And are you satisfied with the results Kevin? Yes even with all the bells and whistles of IS it still is best to take extra care with long lenses.

Re: Teleconverters

Took this with my Sony 70-300mm lens with Kenko x2 converter, light wasnt brilliant hence the ISO 1250, but does show that with this converter atttached i think with a little more practise, could peform some good results.

Taken Hand held, 600mm F11 1/60sec ISO1250, taken with my Sony A700

Re: Teleconverters

Hand held at that exposure - that's pushing it Kevin! Still I'm glad you are pleased as I have just bought a 1.4x. Weather isn't too great just at the moment but I will be clamping it hard down somewhere and seeing what the difference is between my 400 and 400+converter when the images are made the same size then I will post some.
