They haven't recorded!!

Hi

Woooooooah!! lol

The first time this camera has let me down (D200).

I took a load last night and they ain't on the card this morning.

The only things I did diffeently last night were to up the size to 10 meg and use this jonguo gadget as a remote. I saw the images coming up on the screen as I was taking....

Would say the battery WAS low (but still shooting).

Its not like this one to ef up

Was it the low bat??

Chars

Did the 'write' LED flash after the picture was taken?

Re: They haven't recorded!!

I did notice as i was finishing they were taking a long time to record on the screen. I just put that down to the long exposure time being used at the time.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

If they were viewable on the rear screen then chances are that they should have been recorded. BUT:

Were you using noise reduction for long exposures?

If so there are a sequence of events that you must wait for before switching off the camera.

If your D200 is anything like the D300s then:
  • Each long exposure will have noise correction applied before it is stored - there is NO flashing "card active light" until the picture is stored. The delay seems to be approximately proportional to the exposure, at a guess around 20% - e.g. 30sec exposure get 6sec of reduction.
  • A message appears in the top LCD showing "Job nr", while the noise correction is applied. NO flashing "card active light" until the picture gets saved
  • You can take photos while the correction is applied to the previous photo IMPORTANT - this extends the time before you see any flashing light from the "card active light", and thus pictures being stored
  • You may have several photos in the buffer waiting to be corrected and apparently no activity from the camera except for the "Job nr" display.
  • IF you ignore the "Job nr" display and switch off before the data is written to the card then NO picture will be stored.

This is at the least inconvenient, but you say that you saw the rear view screen showing shots. If it is just a few shots that are missing then the chances are either the battery failed or you switched off too early.

In my mind the firmware should do better than this but it seems that Nikon will only correct or improve firmware if there are enough complaints, and I imagine that this receives insufficient attention.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

I think that Graham might well have the answer here. You can verify it by replicating the conditions and taking some more pictures, this time checking to see if what he describes actually happens.

Premature power off or battery running out of juice could well be the issue.

Mmmm interesting, thanks for the note.

Yes, I did switch the noise reduction on but only about half way through the
shoot.

I seem to have lost the whole series, yes.

If you go out at 3am in the dark I guess this is the risk you take ......you may miss some flashing sign in the dark.

Plus the fact the battery was (getting) down to its last bar.

I'm surprised, though, the camera hasn't put a foot wrong so far but I've never lost a whole series of shots from any other camera.

Thanks again for your note.

Do you switch the camera off in between taking pictures? I you do, this might well stop the camera writing to the card.

Yes, maybe once or twice.

I wouldn't say I was dong it all the time....... it powers down quickly as it is.

I WAS concious of the battery but as I recall It was going into sleep mode quickly anyway.

It's all a bit odd.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

Further to Graham's comment - if you switch off while the picture is being written to the card the camera will normally complete the write and the picture will be stored. If you switch off before the picture is being written, e.g. during the noise reduction process, then you will lose the shot.

As I say, a good 4/5 were taken without NR being switched on.

Ta for the ideas.

The low battery pob wasn't the best idea.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

I guess we can rule out noise reduction then

If you were able to see the images on the rear screen that would suggest that you captured the image correctly. It may seem a stupid suggestion but are you certain that the lamp flashed to indicate that an image was being stored? If not you may have a seating problem for the card, but this can easily be checked under normal conditions. On one of the menu settings (custom menu settings - group f), you can prevent the camera from firing if there is no memory card installed. If not already set, then set this and maybe you should not be able to fire the shutter if the card is not seated correctly - you will not see an image on the rear screen as a result.

On the D300s the card door is different from the D200 and will not close completely if the card(s) are not installed correctly/fully, but the D200 may be different (I have no experience with the D200).

Not at all, this is the green light light next to the card slot?

I notice (just experimenting) that it flashes green when first switched on and green again (briefly) just after a shot.

Its good of you to take the time to do this sleuthing on my account but I do know its all BIG learning curve.

What happened last night was disappointing but next time I'll pay a little more attention, keep an eye on that green "write" light, check back it's retaining shots on the card (which I do usually do anyway) and now you've passed on your experience, I know noise reduction and switching off don't mix.

I'm grateful as always.

{apols for being pedantic}

try a different memory card.
I had one that lost everything, and then wouldn't always record images, I dont buy memory cards off auction sites now.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

What ever you do dont format the card! they just still might be on there, if you checked them out on a computer or laptop and perhaps you may have made slight adjustments on them they will not show again when the card is put back in the camera, but they will on your computer, I thought I would give this a mention but you may know about that already! I dont know much about the camera you are using but does it have any internal memory the pictures just maybe in there.....forgive me if I am wrong, but sometimes pictures can go to some very unexplaned places...such is life...........

Yes I wondered if someone might say this.

I haven't formatted the card.

There is obviously something there in the form of white blanks......nothing more. So something's happened.

When I tried to download the pics they were obviously not there, not even the white blanks.

Any advances?

By the way there was clearly a bit of moisture in the air; had I felt one drop of rain I would of returned inside.

May I just add how refreshing it is to post on a forum where people genuinely want to help. I have just left one (audio) forum.......after 7 years posting.....due to the incidence of bullying and a lack of support from the moderator/owner.

Re: They haven't recorded!!

There are a whole bunch of things that you can do to make your card "crap out". Most of the time the images are still there but can't be read normally by the camera or a card reader. It seems like some cameras and some cards are worse then others. It is almost like the index file on the card gets overwritten or becomes corrupt and can't be read by the device.

Sometimes it will happen when: you try to add more images to a card then it will hold; if you turn off the camera before all the images are written to the card; and if the battery fails or is removed while the camera is trying to save an image. Sometimes it will also happen if you try to remove the card right after depressing the shutter. There may also be other situations with some cameras that cause the card to fail as well.

When this happens, don't do anything else with the card.......Remove it and finish your shoot on another card.

There is all kinds of image recovery software that will recover all the images that remain on the "corrupt" card, even some images from previous shoots that were previously deleted. Most disk manufacturers offer this software from their websites and there is also a lot of third party software vendors with different packages.

I learned the hard way, I hope my post can help others out of a jam when it seems like their images have disappeared.
