Total Shutter Actions

How do you know how many shutter actions that your camera has done? is it the frame number thats atached to every picture file eg.DSCNO248 and that this particular camera has made 248 exposures I am about to put a camera up for sale and a figure of DSC 9503 is showing on the file. It is a Nikon camera.

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Have you used the same file types throughout? I think some cameras do give total shutter actuations, but I don't know if Nikon is one of them.

If you have always used one file type, I think the file number is going to be fairly accurate. If you have used (say) RAW and jpg files over the time you have had the camera, then I'd total up the file numbers for each type, or quote them both.

Re: Total Shutter Actions

No, it's not that number, because that resets and is different with different cards etc. Also I should imagine you've made more than 9500 clicks on your D70....since I've made 18,000 on my D300 since buying it in Feb last year...
There's a program that works it out for you, called ShutterClicks, not sure where I found it though so you might have to google it.

Not if you have opted in the menu system to have consecutive file numbers in order to avoid duplicate file numbers on your computer. (I think it goes back to the begginning after 9999). My file numbers don't reset to one when I change the card otherwise I'd only have about 200 file numbers in my whole collection.

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Fair enough, but even so, once you've taken over 9999 photos (which isn't many, included ones you delete straight away), then it resets so if it's an old camera it's not really likely to be an accurate number

Thanks for that guys I have used about three or four cards in the camera and I am sure I have not used the camera for raw so my file number stands at DSN9503.

I'd be pretty confident about that then

You could just say less than 9600 actuations in the ad.

I bet my D70s has done less than that though

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Yes I used the D70 a lot it was my first DSLR and when I bought it I decided to start shooting all fresh pictures but the camera is still in Mint condition but I have not used it for 12 months it seems a shame to keep it but I have not decided yet........... the full frame is eating at my soul at the moment......shall I or what? I still have all my fast Nikkor lenses from my film days there was no way I would ever sell those!

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Don't think it's anything to do with changing cards tbh... The camera simply keeps a count in the filename which rolls over after 9999. My D50 had done 25,000 actuations yet when i last used it I was at DSC_1205

The number of actuations is stored in the EXIF (for Nikons), I used KUSO Exif Viewer and looked up "ShutterCount"

heres one that also works wonders
click on Shutter/Run and load the image
previewextractor
it will take Jpg's but it's more accurate with Raw files straight out of the camera.

Re: Total Shutter Actions

I am worried there is a risk of a misunderstanding here. How long have you had the D70 Des, and how much have you used it? If it's 3 or 4 years or so (whenever around it came out), then it's very unlikely that it's as low 9600 actuations. That's on average less than a years general shooting (non professional).

Where did you get your "statistic" from Jack

I think it is quite possible that Des's D70 has "only" done 9600 actuations over a 3-4 year period (assuming you are correct about the date of its manufacture). Not everyone lives + breathes photography

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Surely not....it's not uncommon for someone to take 200 photos on a trip out somewhere nice, plus test shots and others accumulate. 9600 sounds terribly low for 3 to 4 years...

Re: Total Shutter Actions

No it's not uncommon, but not everyone does it either. In fact I'd say it's more common for newer amateurs to do that kind of shooting, i.e. who came into the photography game after the advent of digital. Des, on the other hand, it seems grew up with film, which would indeed have ingrained in him a natural instinct of a more conservative shutter-usage than, say, yourself

Well that may be, although I am not a machine gunner for the most part, and I did use film and learn to appreciate the art of patience.
Nevertheless, better to check with one of the apps than risk it failing on the new owner and having them complain that the shutter was worn out...

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Throw into the equation that Des says he hasn't used the camera for a year, so that would make it 9500 actuations over a 2-3 year (active) period (according to your calc's), which is a lot closer to the (your) mark, wouldn't you say.

Re: Total Shutter Actions

Hi everybody, I used my D70 for 3years and five months..... but I also use a couple of high spec compact cameras as well I dont do any pro work at all, since I went all digital nine years ago, these cameras have been used mainly on holidays abroad and in this country, I was fortunate enough to win a Olympus E410 outfit last September so my D300 has been semi retired while I played around with my new toy, so really I dont think how long you have had the equipment counts in this case, but thanks for taking a interest! take a raw* image in manual mode 1/60s with the lens cap on and upload the file somewhere... tell us where and we can tell u exactly how many actuations there's been.

prolly easier than all the guesswork

Re: Total Shutter Actions

I could not resist checking my D70s with Shutterclicks and the result surprised me.

The camera is right on three years old right now this month and I would describe the usage as light, so anyone want to guess the shutter count? (Jack?)

Last photo taken was on the 20th December on the last day of my holiday.
