Re: Totally confused.

ACR (I assume you use ACR) will ignore your camera WB and image optimisation settings.

I had to jump through many hoops to get the WB working correctly in PS. I don't bother with custom WB in camera coz, well as i said it's ignored anyway.

try these: -

IR RAW processing - Khromagery

Lightroom-Blog.Com: Creating an IR Camera Profile

Re: Totally confused.

As OP said any setting u have in your camera will only show on the thumbnail u view on your screen on camera and not in the actual RAW file.... cos its RAW so no presets will show.

Re: Totally confused.

Khromagery is pretty much what I do. It should work for you if you save a preset for IR because you use both color and IR on the same camera. It's to bad that Adobe dosen't support custom white balance in raw,, but I have a preset and a default for my camera and keeping my exposures real close makes life a lot easier. I'll mention that IR light is a constant changing light source and I have gotten my best and most consistant exposures in manual mode riding the compansation in the histogram. I do beleave in custom white balance as every other application I have will show the same scene except ACR. But that being said, keep at it and don't give up

I might also add that having a converted camera has put my photography in another level so that's why I might seem out in left field.

Re: Totally confused.

Never bother with WB in-camera as an irrelevance. My IR-only are certainly easier to get right than my IR+visible shots but I have as much fun getting them "right" as I do in getting an interesting shot

????...... and there was me about to "Play" with Custom WB in my camera.....
You may have saved me some wasted time....
If Potatoeshop ignores custom WB, does anyone know if PhotoPlus does as well?...

If Photo editors, in general, ignore custom WB, whay have we got it in the camera in the first place?....

If it is ignored by default, is there any way to get any photo editor to NOT ignore it?....

More questions than answers, I know, but I am here to LEARN.......

Re: Totally confused.

I should have been clearer. Adobe Camera Raw ignores the white balance and other picture control settings for Nikon cameras. Can't speak for Canon.

Re: Totally confused.

Custom white balance adjusted in an IR camera, shot in RAW and opened in ACR will open with a tempeture setting of 2000 and a tint of +36 or near that if taken with a converted camera or an IR filter on the front of a color camera. My preview and Aperture and DXO all open my IR raw pictures as they appear when I use a custom white balance taken with green grass. ACR will try to show it but it will be tinted warmer, in the other editors they look almost black and white. If I don't use a custom white balance they will have various levels of red and have to be desaturated for black and white use. The whole "photopotato" wrong with this thread is how you want your picture to look when you open it. As for white balance in the camera, it works for me

Last edited by Boofers; 01-08-2009 at 03:32. Reason: Made wrong statement for setting of tint, is -36

Re: Totally confused.

I am sorry, I made a mistake with the tint number for ACR, it should have been -36. With different lenses I have a different number as low as -66. The pictures show just a little brown bronze coloring and are not at all hard to work with. Thats just how I use ACR,,the tempeture never changes from 2000. I should say that I have more trouble with exposure and work at it constantly sometimes. Every lens seems to work a little differently. I have had very good success with DXO and lightZone showing my custom white balance settings. No biggy I use a rebel XTi.
