What range and focal length are you using? Are you under the minimum focus distance?

Re: tropical fish photo

Most of that is double dutch to me but the hand sign is signifying that the camera isn't steady and/or there isn't enough light. Can you post a photo so we can possible look at the exif data. Or can you tell us the f number, shutter speed and ISO?

Re: tropical fish photo

Take a photo of the fish using Auto setting. View the photo in camera and you will see the settings overlaid on screen. Look for -

Aperture which will be something like F2.8 or F3.6 or F4.0 or F5.6 etc
Shutter speed which will look like1/4, 1/60, 1/200,
Iso which will look like ISO100 or ISO200 or ISO400

Try to post that info and if that fails we'll try to get you started with uploading photos.

Re: tropical fish photo

A first guess might be that your shutter speed is too slow to freeze the fish's movement. It's OK for the background. If you read this step by step guide it will help you to upload photos and to post them into the forums. Take your time and don't worry if you don't get it right first time

The link that Stepheno gave you is not a download link, it is a link to the 'using the members gallery' tutorial. If you have to enter your password you are not logged into the site.

You can also find it by going to community forums>site guides and rules>how to use the members gallery. It is the top one in this section.

I'd agree that on the info you have given it is likely that your shutter speed is too low.

Re: tropical fish photo

Hi there in reply to Photographing fish, what fish?
Many years ago Photographers used to build fish tanks
With a very shallow depth, if this is for use in a professional manner
Any local aquarium would knock one of these up very easily
Shallow depth then gives you less problems when photographing
Allowing for scenery rocks etc if needed.

I can only find one picture.

To delete, click on the thumbnail to get to the full sized image and in the top right corner you will find the photo options drop-down. Go to edit photo and at the bottom there is a check box to delete the image.

Re: tropical fish photo

I had a marine fish tank for a few years and photoing it was never easy.

Two trains of thought really. Either natural light and lots of it or try to fill with artificial as well as flashes.

Off camera flashes are essential because otherwise you get reflections on the glass. Polarising filters help.

I prefer natural light with artificial help but not flash.

I would switch all my tank lights on full but also stand a domestic halogen next to the tanks with a diffuser such as some material or a soft box etc would be better.

Flash is great for fish only but you get a dark background hence the above.

I'll dig out a few.

One thing to remember, fish can be really quick so a higher shutter speed is essential for detail.

Re: tropical fish photo

An old trick is to put another pane of glass in the tank to restrict the fishes movement to around 25mm and keep it in focus however it needs to be done with care to avoid disturbing the sediment. You could make a narrow photographic tank, nowadays it's easy to construct one out of a few bits of glass and some silicone sealant

Re: tropical fish photo

It is best to try to fill the frame with the subject rather than cropping.

You will only get sharp pictures by improving your technique and this will need a lot of trial and error. A tripod will enable the camera to be much steadier and will eliminate camera shake. I've not tried to take pictures of fish, but maybe the water will fool the auto focus and you may have to use manual focus. Perhaps someone who has done this could comment on if Af works when shooting through water.

To get faster shutter speeds you might have to improve the lighting. You can also increase the ISO, but this might give you a noisy image that would need to be run through a noise reducing program.

Filling the frame will also improve the composition by omitting the filter or heater in the bottom of the tank and the water line at the back of the tank where you have the line/flare going across the picture.

Re: tropical fish photo

Hi Stepheno
The blue light at the top of the tank is where the light is hitting the water line and i think is reflicting the light the silver space ship thing is the heater thermastact for heating the water.
Hi Graham
I am still strugling with the other photos as they do not come up when the computer try's to find them but can get them when the memery card is used and it shows 101 fuji and it wont let me upload ont site so will try again i must have mist some thing .Do you want me to crop and alter the pictures before i upload them or leave as they are taken.
Will try some other things and settings as you have sugested , also try and post again, its a lot to learn for a begginer all at once.

Sounds like the other two pictures have not transferred to your computer. You will not be able to upload to Pixalo direct from the memory card as the images will be too big. You have to copy them to your computer, then re-size them, then upload to Pixalo. I would not crop them at this time as we might get some clues as to what is happening by seeing the whole picture.

Keep plugging away and you will crack it.

Re: tropical fish photo

Yes, they are in the gallery. They will not appear in the forums unless you add them to a post.

If you want to post them in a thread, I suggest you start a new thread in the Domestic Animal Forum.

The easiest way is to start your new thread then click on the right hand icon above the text entry box, then click once on the image you want to insert. To post more than one image, close the window with your images, insert a space by using your enter/return key then repeat the procedure. This will ensure that there is a space between your pictures.
