Trouble with my external flash/shutter syncing in Auto and P mode (Canon G5)
For some reason, only in my Auto and P mode on my Canon G5 I keep having synching problems with my external flash and my shutter on the camera. (btw, I'm a super newbie) I can't quite figure out why, I would think something was wrong with my flash or the hotshoe but it works fine in every other mode.
I used to get great pics even in Auto most of the time but now everything is dark. Btw, I'm using a 430EX external flash. I'm on vacation right now, and uber-dissappointed that I'm having a hard time with my camera. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: Trouble with my external flash/shutter syncing in Auto and P mode (Canon G5)
It sounds to me as though you might have a couple of in-camera settings wrong. I am not a G5 user so am working from research rather than experience but hopefully something here will help.
Have you got 'Slow-synch' set to On? If so, you need to turn that off. Then the flash should default to 1/60th second and the light output from the flash should be automatically adjusted accordingly. Flash Adjust should be set to Auto. Check that you haven't inadvertently adjusted the 'Flash compensation'. That should be set to 0. Also, check your shooting mode. If it is set to continuous shooting, this will deactivate the flash. Check these and see if you get any difference MSid. If this doesn't solve it, I'll dig deeper and see what i can find for you. Cheers, Rob

Re: Trouble with my external flash/shutter syncing in Auto and P mode (Canon G5)
Thanks for the quick response.
Hmm so slow synchro is off.. it does end up shooting at 1/60th. there is no setting in the menu to change it from manual to auto in P or Auto (only in Tv, Av, and M). So I'm assuming that it is automatically set to auto. the weird thing is in Tv, Av, or M mode the flash is set to manual and it works fine. But if I change it to Auto it doesn't work. Flash compensation is also set at 0 and continuous shooting isn't on. |
