*** PLEASE NOTE THIS IS IN REFERENCE TO ANOTHER SITE ...... NOT PIXALO ***** (uplated by pixalo crew)

Some time ago someone here wrote [I e-mailed their Admin (someone called Steve from Ruislip) with my feelings and I was rapidly i.p. banned from the site! Fortunately in the meantime I traced a few of their main photo contributors to warn them. ]

I have just been banned from this site.
I made the mistake of commenting on a reply I got to a message I posted. It was the same message for help that I posted here under the title 'Picture Transfer'.
At the end of my post I tagged on the line: 'A reply by e-mail would also be handy'

This guy Steve patronisingly told me that I was insane for even thinking about posting my e-mail address on the Web for all to see!
He also stated that I would 'Suffer for life from SPAM' if I did so!
He made several other patronising comments and when I replied to this effect ...I now find that I am banned!

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

My email address is all over the place, on websites, my business cards, my adverts for my posters, whatever. So what? Anyone wants it it's robbarron@aol.com

Anyone going to ban me for posting my own email address? Nope! We all suffer for life from Spam, it is part and parcel of the internet, life goes on!

If UKExpert wants to ban you for that then it just shows what sort of site it is. Not saying you shouldn't be a member of other fora if you wish, go right ahead, but select carefully. From bitter experience they are NOT all as good as Pixalo and none that I have found have been as friendly, welcoming and helpful.

So welcome to Pixalo, enjoy the forum and if you really want to tell someone your email address that is up to you. Might be advisable to tell them in a PM but the choice is entirely yours.

Cheers,
Rob

Who by the way is not a member of the Pixalo Crew, I am just a member who thinks it's the bees knees!

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

Well to be honest it's not good netiquette to ask for replies via email

It kinda says: -
"I'm too important/lazy to bother coming back here for your response"
"Can you go to the extra effort when replying to expose private information about yourself via email (IP & email addy)"

There's also the added point that forums are where peeps share knowledge. If everyone replied via email it wouldn't be much of a shared resource.

As for the posting the email address comments - sound advice imo.

btw, your post isn't very clear. Are you banned from here or ukexpert?

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

i have to agree with everything that Rob and peel have said, however i do think that if you want to put your email out there then that is your own choice and to ban you frmo somewhere for doing so smacks of high handedness and a bit like " we know better and dont want the likes of you here"............ you will do far better here anyway

Note on Pixalo , it's always possible to get PM'd when a subscribed thread is updated, which in turn should email you

I am banned from UKEXPERT.
I did not request replies ONLY in e-mail but ALSO. I have long been an advocate of replies being made for all interested persons to see.
I have absolutely no qualms about making my e-mail address known ...I do so every day.
It was one of the main points I made in the reply that led to my ban. I also added that I have given out my 'snail mail' address on inumerable accasions in the past ...admittedly within more secure situations.
I believe my 'sin' was to criticise the person who replied to my post for being ...IMO ...patronising.

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

ok im sure i am not the only one who went over to have a nose at UKExpert............ i was however a bit surprised when reading their terms and conditions........

not only do they insist that you upload hi res images up to 8mb.... they do not allow any text OR writing at all on them...... but include this in their Tand C

"By submitting images and messages and other material to ukexpert.co.uk you warrant that you are the copyright owner and that you grant ukexpert.co.uk permanent copyright ownership equal to your own for all materials uploaded. This includes a permanent right for ukexpert.co.uk and its associated systems and companies to make use of them in any way they see fit, including but not limited to use in advertising and promotional material. This means you can continue to do as you please with your photos and messages and other materials uploaded but by adding these items to the ukexpert collection/system you are granting ukexpert the right to also do as it pleases with all content submitted to the system. You agree that any material uploaded to the system or created on it, including but not limited to photographs, messages, and user IDs, may be retained as the property of ukexpert.co.uk "

cheap way to get access to someone elses hard work! have to say as soon as i read this i exited the site and i for one wont be going back to it!
Ches you were lucky i reckon!

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

Excellent point very well made Fiona. Taking members copyright to allow showing on the website here is fine, that is necessary because some numpty might upload a picture and then moan it is being shown (Doh, why did you upload it then!) but the wording of UKExpert clearly says they can make use of the pictures in ANY WAY THEY WANT and that is why they insist on high res.

Ask yourself this question: what other reason would a website have for demanding high res pictures other than that they want to use them for their own profit making? On this website, there is absolutely no need for high res at all.

Ches, thanks for highlighting this site, it really does make me feel grateful for what we have here on Pixalo. Sure giving out your email addy is not usually wisest action BUT it IS up to you and I don't need some officious power-mad admin guy telling me what I can and cannot do. And if he does it, I will happily call him patronising, just like you did.

Ok, time for me to go now, Casino Royale tonight :o)

Cheers all,
Rob

Strewth, apart from stealing your pictures and you giving them permission, they can sell them and not pay you a penny and can even publish your comments as though they are their own!

I can only assume the people who inncoently join that particular forum do not read the small print or do not understand its implications!

Ok, I'll stay

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

Very interesting thread. I joined there last year when starting out in photography but I didn't read the small print, I always wondered why they wanted large resolution images. I've just been back on there to delete my pictures but there does not appear to be any way of doing it.

Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

Well now! I found this thread very interesting, especially in the light of my experience. I found a site which is called aboutus.org and there is a whole discussion on ukexpert. This is just my bit. You can read it all at aboutus.org/UkExpert.co.uk

Why Anonymous

I did go and take a look and found that the administrator was just as dicourteous as described.
In fact despite claiming to probably be the longest established community of its kind, as well as demanding full sized images etc.... they are far from welcoming.
I submitted a picture of a chap dressed as Santa Claus, leaping in the fountains of Somerset House during May 2005. I thought it might be included under the section titled Christmas. As a newcomer to the site I would have thought a little polite help might have been forthcoming. No, not even a message. When I asked the reason why my picture wasn't accepted I got a very curt reply with no suggestion as to where it should be placed. I had also mistakenly not turned the picture around, I thought I had - but my mistake. Thinking I might try again I submitted another photo of a different subject - I never had it accepted, and when I asked again, I found I was no longer a recognised member of the site.
I was also told my pictures were too small and incorrectly labelled. I have owned a digital camera since 1990 and was an early adopter of such things. I bought an Olympus which took super photographs, but the images were only 1.9 Megapixels. It cost nearly 900 when new and took very clear pictures (the camera has had many rave reviews). To be told that this was no better than a current mobile phone was somewhat insulting. What about the image or composition?
I took a good look around their galleries, and indeed there are a few very nice pictures, but most are not so wonderful. There were several that had been submitted by the owner of the site that were well below 1.9 Megapixels.
I may in terms of net ettiquette have committed some minor misdemeanors, but I do not believe I was ever rude or offensive. May be in the busy world of moderators there is no time for courtesy. I am writing this with no feeling of sour grapes, just as a plain honest report of my experience. I certainly made no personal attacks. The final remark made to me ended with a phrase suggesting I might like to "just wander off somewhere else".
So no thanks, I doubt that you will see me over there again, and just one last question, why was the post anonymous? Are they afraid of being banned

Now given my polite, pleasant and welcoming experience here, I now have even less reason to take another look. Enough said I think.

well i wold like to think that no one would ever be treated in that way by any member here...... we may have our little misunderstandings and sometimes hottly worded debates, but i think we all class ourselves as adults which means we act in an adult manner!........ ( well. on here anyway )

Hi there folks.

I'm appalled to hear about this case. But did you know that you have a legal recourse? You can actually demand the site to remove your photos. In fact, under UK law, it's not even legal to steal your photographs like this, and it's an UK company, so -- quite frankly -- their contract is useless.

(i removed the references to the article I wrote, because linking to my own article was seen as spam by Pixalo crew. Sorry about that.)

Hehe, well, I was tipped off about this thread by a friend of mine (Geir, not sure if he posts here, too), and was so infuriated that I decided to write a separate article about it for my website

Well I personally don't have a problem with whatever you post, it's was just odd you were so genned up on the subject.

Hi and welcome to Pixalo.

I have removed your link in your first post. You may add your personal site into your signature or onto our members website list but self promotion within threads is not allowed.

Since you wrote the article and own the copywrite for it you can copy it out here (if you want to help our users) and then add a link at the end to the original source. That way our users will be able to chose weather or not to go and look at your site rather than being forced.

If you chose to display the article here, it and the copywrite will remain yours at all time.

Thanks for your understanding

Of course I post here . I'm in several times a day, spending quite a bit of time.

I sent a link on this to SharQ, because I read his site and know him to be an excellent writer. I hope you'll post the article again on Pixalo SharQ, as I think it's a very important read. Linking isn't allowed, so I do hope you'll duo-post it..

Not wishing to copy the article here is a legal issue, rather than a copyright issue: I am happy to defend myself for stuff I write on my own website, but there's a good chance that Pixalo might be taken to UK court over that article, as it could be perceived as being libellous. UK libel law is a lot stricter than anywhere else in the world.

As such, copying the article into this thread means I have to face potential legal trouble twice.

Anyway, if I can't link to my own site, I hope somebody else will link to that article for me, because I do believe it is highly relevant to the topic.

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

I am not going to get into a debate with you, you have made your points and I have stated Pixalo postion. You and I both know that you didn't write a 900 word article specifically for helping the people in this thread...it was done to provide content and promotion of your site.

I have treated you with respect, please offer me the same curtiousy. Any links to article posted here will be deleted.

Re: Ukexpert.co.uk

Since I am the one that informed SharQ of this thread, and gave him the info for the article, I feel I am the one to blame. I sent him the information, and suggested it might make a good article/story, and would be highly relevant.

If I have broken any "law" or I am in error for doing so, please let me know.
I am forever sorry if I have started something here. It was NOT my intention, and I really feel awful if this is wrong of me. Again, please let me know if have done anything wrong.

Steve: I sent you a PM with some information. I would be glad if you might find the time to reply.

Sincerely,
Geir Andersen
