Re: unsure

Effectively, bellows are just adjustable tubes so you can choose the size of your resulting 'tube'! Downside to bellows are that, like here, you usually lose exposure control and AF. AF's not really a problem but most modern lenses don't have an aperture ring - yes, the suggested method usually works but it's a PIA!

I'd recommend tubes with electrical contacts to retain exposure control/AF or M42 bellows on which you can stick an M42 lens (which have an aperture ring)

Re: unsure

What does have an aperture ring and makes a good macro lens is an enlarger lens, there must be lots of those kicking around and going cheap.

1.plain mounting ring
2. lens to nikon af-confirm adapter or

Re: unsure

Noting having the ability to AF won't be a problem but you might want the ability to measure/set aperture. Infinity focus is something you lose whenever you add tubes/bellows and, on the basis that you're going to be taking macro, is not needed.

Having said that, I add a tube to my 500mm lens to bring focus closer for garden birds - and so lose infinity focus (my tubes have the contacts, so AF and aperture control are kept)

Re: unsure

No worries! I should really spend more time with M42 as it's a great way to try techniques/lenses for not much money!
