Unsure

Hi guys, just a thought i need help on a lens, have Nikon 300mm f/4 thats almost new but have not used it much as i find wildlife photography to fast for me, would i be best selling the lens & getting something like 80-200 f/2.8, 24-80 f2.8, 17-55 f/2.8 that i think i would get more use from?any help would be great.

Re: Unsure

Depends on what wildlife your trying to capture. I have the older version of the Nikkor 300mm f/4, which is one of my favourite lenses. I'm sure that if you just stuck it on your D90 and played around for a few days you would see some good results, especially if you were to use a monopod.

Re: Unsure

I'm sure that you have shown some pretty good shots with this lens Shane. Maybe just ignore the fast wildlife and concentrate on the slow/static stuff?

Me too. I think that you are better being selective on what you shoot and then you will probably find you are using the lens more.

Re: Unsure

I can understand your position Shane. My 300 lies still, but mainly because during the winter I cannot get the ISO low enough to get appreciable detail using higher shutter speeds for nature's faster animals.

I would like any long telephoto with a decent aperture for winter use, but the costs are very high and the lenses are not so portable. This lens is a good compromise. It also has the ability to focus very close which can be useful, and it is sharp.

The lens has one disadvantage though - it's not a zoom. Acquiring fast moving creatures with a telephoto prime lens is also not as easy as with a zoom, where you can 'find' the subject at wide angle and then zoom in. Prime lenses define their use and are not as flexible as zooms but on the other hand they can lead to a more creative approach with a particular focal length. I agree with Graham, and would explore the qualities of a 300mm prime and see how far you can take it.

Re: Unsure

I guess it depends Shane on what you want to take. If you think that wildlife / birds are not for you, and you'd prefer to concentrate on landscapes etc, it might well be worthwhile trading in the 300 for lenses that you would get more use out of.

Re: Unsure

The advantage of the 300mm f/4 is that it's light and will take a 1.4x TC (to take it to 420mm f/5.6) without losing too much quality

Having said that, I use mine very rarely nowadays - take my 500mm f/4.5 for specific wildlife shooting, my 150-500 f/6.3 for general use or my 70-200 f/2.8 for woofs. So it tends to get an outing in the summer for if/when we go dragonfly hunting
