Re: using hoods

Basically, if the sun (or a strong source of light) is anywhere in front of you, a lens hood can help to prevent flare caused by unwanted light entering the lens.

With very wide angle lenses this can be a little tricky, as the field of view means that the hood can only be a few short petals. Hoods are more effective with longer focal length lenses.

They also act as protection to the lens - although some manufacturers charge silly prices for lens hoods, they're still cheaper to replace than a lens if they get a knock.

Re: using hoods

I tend to use them primarily for lens protection and my hand (or a convenient shadow) to prevent lens flare (my Zenitar fisheye doesn't have a hood so my hand is very necessary as it can get serious flare!)

Re: using hoods

Solid by preference - I've bashed two lenses which might've suffered damage to at least the attached filter but got away with a marked hood! And when out and about I don't put lens caps on (for quick change) and hoods give a clearance from my bag

Re: using hoods

I find the hood useful for lens protection too - just a niggle though when using a polarising filter since I can't rotate the filter without removing the hood. Also the hood needs to be reversed to get the darn camera into the bag!

Re: using hoods

I think hoods are grossly underated . As Mark says he uses his hand as well at times which tells you big is best PROVIDED you check that it is not going to cause vignetting when used at the shortest focal length of the lens.
