If I am not mistaken a similar job was advertised in the latest issue (Dec 2006) of Professional Photographer.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer
Be wary of the cruise ship jobs, i know a few people who have done them and have heard very mixed reports. If you really look for them, they advertise pretty much all the time. But the norm appears to be a 6month away period (at least). Quite often if you don't have your own equipment you can "hire" or buy their kit, can't remember anyone telling me they were loaned/given kit. Normally you'll be stuck on the ship 24/7 with the odd time off, so not much seeing of the world to be done. And not much money earned at the end.
But may well still be an interesting job and you may have a good experience, but like i say if you really want to work on a cruise ship as a photographer there will be an advert out there somewhere.....there always is. |

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer
I suppose it's similar to young actors and actresses doing holiday camp stints. They may not make much money but they get serious exposure (sorry!) to the real life problems of earning a living in an overcrowded industry.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer
Having been on a cruise or two as a passenger, my opinion is that yes, it is a very hard job. These guys are out there taking anywhere from 400 to 2000 pictures at some event every day. Yes, sometimes there are more than one photog, but that is still a lot of snaps.
Then they have to process the images. Then they have to "man the store" to sell the prints for probably several hours a day. I suspect that there is not much time to see the world because at every port, the photographer is there to snap as people disembark, then must process. skip |

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer
Greetings, my first post here.
I did seven years as a photog on cruise ships, starting in 1993 as a junior and finishing as manager in 2000. Make no mistake, it's hard work and not for the faint hearted. On a normal contract you will work 7 days a week for 6 months without a day off, although you will get time off. Some days you may work for 16 hours, some days you may only work for 3 hours. Various cruise lines or concessions have differing policies on equipment, a concession will supply uniform and camera gear that will be deducted from your pay. Working directly for a cruise line, they will supply a uniform and camera gear, but you will be responsible for any damage to the now DSLR supplied. The shooting of most events is covered by the junior photogs, whilst the printing is managed by the senior photogs. The general atmosphere of the crew is work hard, play hard. I worked on Princess, RCL, Costa, NCL and Deilmann ships and had some of the best years of my life. I've seen half the world including the Caribbean, Alaska, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, Hawaii, 2 atlantic crossings and chased 10 cruise ships across Panama in a 4 wheel drive to get the shots the punters couldn't. You either loved it or hated it. I loved it. |
