Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

Quote:
Ideally looking for people aged between 20-30, they donít have to be professional photographers but be able to demonstrate a strong interest and prove it is a major hobby. Personality is the most important aspect as they will be working daily in a high pressure, guest services orientated environment and must be able to be friendly but professional at all times.

The job itself will be hard work. There will be long hours involved and long periods away from home, as such people need to think hard about it before applying.

Ideally we would be looking for people that have either worked in a similar role (events/guest photographer) or people with a strong customer services background (working in 4-5star hotels with good photographic knowledge).

Would anyone be interested in this job? we have been approached to advertise this postition, if you would like more information and contact details please PM me and i will forward information to you!

If I am not mistaken a similar job was advertised in the latest issue (Dec 2006) of Professional Photographer.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

Be wary of the cruise ship jobs, i know a few people who have done them and have heard very mixed reports. If you really look for them, they advertise pretty much all the time. But the norm appears to be a 6month away period (at least). Quite often if you don't have your own equipment you can "hire" or buy their kit, can't remember anyone telling me they were loaned/given kit. Normally you'll be stuck on the ship 24/7 with the odd time off, so not much seeing of the world to be done. And not much money earned at the end.
But may well still be an interesting job and you may have a good experience, but like i say if you really want to work on a cruise ship as a photographer there will be an advert out there somewhere.....there always is.

I suppose it's similar to young actors and actresses doing holiday camp stints. They may not make much money but they get serious exposure (sorry!) to the real life problems of earning a living in an overcrowded industry.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

Having been on a cruise or two as a passenger, my opinion is that yes, it is a very hard job. These guys are out there taking anywhere from 400 to 2000 pictures at some event every day. Yes, sometimes there are more than one photog, but that is still a lot of snaps.

Then they have to process the images.

Then they have to "man the store" to sell the prints for probably several hours a day.

I suspect that there is not much time to see the world because at every port, the photographer is there to snap as people disembark, then must process.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

Greetings, my first post here.

I did seven years as a photog on cruise ships, starting in 1993 as a junior and finishing as manager in 2000. Make no mistake, it's hard work and not for the faint hearted. On a normal contract you will work 7 days a week for 6 months without a day off, although you will get time off. Some days you may work for 16 hours, some days you may only work for 3 hours. Various cruise lines or concessions have differing policies on equipment, a concession will supply uniform and camera gear that will be deducted from your pay. Working directly for a cruise line, they will supply a uniform and camera gear, but you will be responsible for any damage to the now DSLR supplied.

The shooting of most events is covered by the junior photogs, whilst the printing is managed by the senior photogs. The general atmosphere of the crew is work hard, play hard. I worked on Princess, RCL, Costa, NCL and Deilmann ships and had some of the best years of my life. I've seen half the world including the Caribbean, Alaska, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, Hawaii, 2 atlantic crossings and chased 10 cruise ships across Panama in a 4 wheel drive to get the shots the punters couldn't.

You either loved it or hated it.

I loved it.

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

The company that owns the ship normally provides the camera equipment so it will depend on which ship with which company.

Whichever it is, you can expect it to be a digital SLR of some description, so if you can use one of those and pass all the interviews etc you should be OK.

P&O seem to be recruiting at the moment.
Dont have the link but there is a Careers link on their homepage. The details are on there.
I'd love to do it myself but I have a young family I wouldnt want to leave for that long and I dont like the idea of sharing a cabin smaller than my old halls of residence room with someone I potentially didnt like!!

Re: Vacancy: Cruise Ship Photographer

Not wanting to pour cold water on the fire of enthusiasm of anyone wanting to do this job but I just thought you might want a heads up on the reality of these jobs. My close friend did exactly this job and because he needed the work did three different ships but the work was the same so you might want to read on.

The requirements of a photographer without professional experience does give a clue as to the level they are looking at. They don't expect much and they do supply the camera.... usually a digital bridge / prosumer camera rather than a dSLR. The job basically involves specific sessions for a small part of the day and much more of the day wandering around the ship taking photos of anyone who will stand still long enough and then flogging it to them. You just take their cabin number and then the sales team will visit them and sell them exorbitantly priced pictures printed fairly simply and stuck in all manner of frames - which is where they make most money.

Everyone wants pictures with the captain hence the brief 'sittings' when either the captain or purser will come along in full uniform and you just keep shooting away. As long as the person isn't blinking, the shot is fine! They'll sell it as the customers are more interested in having a keepsake of their meeting with the captain than they are in the technical merits of the shots.

You work very long hours and when you are not taking pictures you will help with printing them out, sticking them in card frames, etc. and delivering them to the cabins where you try to put them inside on the table looking pretty and with a bill attached.

Calls to Ports will mean traipsing around wherever the punters visit and getting pictures of them there or staying dockside and taking pics of them in front of the ship.

The main reason for doing this type of work is of course the money. Wll don't hold your breath on getting rich any time soon! You get basic accommodation, sharing with others who of course usually snore, meals after the punters have eaten (i.e. left-overs) long hours and basic wage which nobody wuld ever work for ashore. You get a share of commission which is what keeps you pushing for punters the entire cruise.

You will come back with no professional experience worth speaking of as you will not be using high-end equipment nor will you be using anything other than basic studio lighting (set it up once and leave it throughout!).

If you are a later-teen, early-20s on a gap year then this is ideal for you. For anyone wanting to seriously do photography, it is a non-starter.

I hope that gives you a little insight, from someone who has done it all and hated it (not me as I said before but I have been regaled with countless stories of the trips and wouldn't go near one of these jobs with a barge pole!)

Cheers,
Rob
