warranty question

I've bought a lens but just wondered if I was to sell it, if the warranty could go to the next owner? I've asked WE were the lens comes from, and they say no. But if at any point the lens would need repair, then can't you send it to Nikon? I haven't registered the lens for the 2 years warranty under my name as yet.

Re: warranty question

The obligations of WE under the Sale of Goods Act extend only to yourself as the original purchaser - they have no contract with anyone to whom you may subsequently sell the lens.

The Nikon warranty may be transferable - there may be something about this in the documentation supplied with the lens, or else perhaps you could phone Nikon and clarify the position.

Re: warranty question

In general warranties are only valid for the first purchaser of a product.

Where they are transferrable, it usually states this somewhere as it can be an incentive for the first buyer to buy (or for purchasers of used goods more likely to seek out their products) as they know that if they sell the item the warranty will stay valid and will usually make a sale easier and realise a better price.

Re: warranty question

Dutchie, i looked into this when i sold my sigma lens.
I contacted warehouse express and sigma, they both said the warranty is not transferable , as you need to produce the original receipt and the warranty is only valid for the original purchaser.

Re: warranty question

My understanding is that warranties are generally not transferrable.

Re: warranty question

Well I asked as well, because when you sell stuff on ebay, people always ask if there is still warranty left on the item. Especially the photo equipment. So there must be loads of people thinking when they buy let's say the camera or lens, and there is warranty left on it for the owner, that they can just take it over.

But no youcan't take over the warranty. It states on the back of the warranty slip that you get of nikon.

Then I just wonder why people bother paying near enough the full price on ebay for lenses or camera's while it is second hand and without warranty on it Daft isn't it!

Re: warranty question

Shamelessly lifted from a reply to a similar question on another forum....

Quote:
Basically, you're right, technically the warranty is non-transferable and only valid for the original owner. However, this would clearly present problems in the case of gifted items which are purchased by one person but owned by another. So, the loophole in buying a previously owned camera is to obtain the original sales receipt, make sure the camera isn't previously registered, and claim it was a gift. Or else, one could make a deal with the original owner that if the camera needs repair, the original owner can just take it in.

Re: warranty question

Yes I forgot about that. I was thinking about how it would work then if it's a gift and it breaks. Surely you must be able to send it off for repair and give the necessarry paperwork in as proof. The only thing would be that the address is different.
