Watermarks Vs filesize on Flickr

Just spent the last hour and a bit replacing all my photos on Flickr, after a comment a visitor (not that I get many anyway) left. Most of my photos are or were watermarked with a not too large transparent bit of txt through the photo. The comment remarked that it sorta spoiled the effect of what was a decent photo.

It got me thinking that the all the photos I uploaded to Flickr were sized at 500 on the longest side which think is the max that Flickr displays them anyway, also the filesize was quite small but not enough to look rubbish on a monitor. I think downloading a pic of that size is not going to be much use for printing so would this rule out the need to spoil a photo with a watermark ?

Just wondering what you guys do if you have Flckr accounts, obtrusive watermark on a good sized photo or keep sizes to 500 on the longest side or less with no watermark.

Re: Watermarks Vs filesize on Flickr

I do 1000px on the longest side and rarely remember to watermark.

Doubt any of my stuff is worth nicking so why worry. If someone did pinch em, a watermark is rarely a barrier anyway.

Yup! I don't bother ruining my images - I'm with OP in that my pics aren't worth nicking but then, so what if someone does?

BTW, you'd be amazed what can be done with upscaling a 500px image, so don't rely on size

Yeh - with apps like genuine fractals and others like it, you can turn a smallish image into something that is passable for a print.. Only way to be 'safe' is to hoard your images and not publish them..

Myself, I prefer to give the image a black border and white stripe and put any watermark or copyright in the black area.. I'd probably consider it a honor to produce images people wanted to steal.. (and then get mad)

Re: Watermarks Vs filesize on Flickr

Personally I'd be quite chuffed if someone wanted to steal my photo's (I'm just a beginner). However, if someone is determined a watermark will not stop them. On the bright side, anyone doing this is most likely going to use the image for personal use and unlikely to publish the image anywhere.
