Hi all, I am going to be doing my first wedding shoot for one of my best friends on the 3rd of November, any hints, tips or words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.

Re: Wedding photography

Hi Jamie - in no particular order:

Take - an assisstant - a golf umberella - memory cards - spare batteries - flashgun - notebook and pen - spare body/friends camera -

Check - batteries are charged - venue (photos allowed?) - weather forcast -

Plan - shooting of main players and groups - signing the register - cutting the cake - arrival/departure/bride getting ready/groom in pub - find out if any particular photos wanted -

No doubt others will chip[ in.......

Re: Wedding photography

Double Check Everything , I Hope You Have The Confidence To Do This,
If Not , And You Make Any Mistakes, Your Best Friend Will Become Your
Ex Best Friend.

Have You Had Any Experience With Wedding Photography ,assisting Etc.
If Not, Then I Would Suggest You Assist At A Few Weddings, Before You
Take One On Your Own.

As This Is Your Best Friends Wedding And If You Haven't Done One Before
Then My Answer Would Be Don't

Re: Wedding photography

My advice would be to plan as much as you possibly can... make lists of everything - kit to bring, spares to borrow (definitely take two of everything essential - even if that means borrowing a body and a flash from a friend or whatever).

Also, visit the venue with the couple beforehand, agree on 'set piece' photos - couple shots, family shots, fake register signing, cake cutting, etc. Check that there aren't any venue-specific limitations on what you can shoot and make a list of the essential shots so that you don't forget any on the day.
Ask your friend if she has a brother/friend/cousin/whoever who knows the family well enough that they can boss them around a bit without offending anyone... if there is someone willing to do this then give them a photocopy of your essential shots list and it'll be a godsend when it comes to corralling relatives into group shots (when said relatives might prefer to be sipping their champagne at the time)!

Agree exactly what you will and will not be delivering: prints, album(s), DVD, website, etc. Also discuss beforehand whether you will be providing digital copies at printable size, or if you'll be offering prints for sale to grannies etc.

Finally, remember to enjoy yourself and remain friendly even if you're feeling a bit stressed. You'll get much better shots if you're blending in at the event and people prefer being photographed by nice people!

Re: Wedding photography

Hi Jaimej - I'm usually a bit concerned when people write the message that you started with, but I'm a little more concerned with your post because I've just had a look at your personal gallery and there isn't a single picture of a person. Are you comfortable taking pictures of people? If not then it's not wise to gamble with the happiest day of somebodies life, just to save a few hundred pounds on their part.

Sorry to be blunt, but you need to make sure that you have every angle covered. The advice the other members is really good, especially the brolley, as if it rains everybody can be under a tree or the church entrance, but you may in the rain!

Re: Wedding photography

Hi Jaimej,
I've just done the photo's for a friends wedding, my first wedding
like everyone else the worry is something will go wrong,
you've still got a couple of weeks to prepare, practice on friends and family all the type's of shots your probably going to take, then practice some more, make sure your confident of your own ability.
The wedding i did was at a Country Club, if your wedding is at a similar place where there's a bar, do the group shots first, otherwise you'll be struggling to get people away from their beers
other than that good luck
i hope all goes well for you

Bob

Re: Wedding photography

One of the first I did I just turned up. Did not check the place out and walked into a lot of trouble. So I would go to the wedding and reception venue before the event, check what and where can shoot. Go there the time of day you will be there and find the angles for light and good positions you want to take the pictures. Take shoots, go show bride and groom and explain your idea's.

Enjoy yourself as it can be great fun.

Re: Wedding photography

First of all thanks all for the great advice. I am planning to go up a couple of days before just to have a look around, I have all the equipment sorted and will definately be taking a golf umbrella, this is Scotland after all. I have organised a member of the family who will be helping me to line everyone up and will be taking the photos well before anyone starts drinking.

In answer to paulgroom I am pretty comfortable shooting people and have done quite alot of it, mainly on film, this is my poor excuse for not having any people shots in my gallery, I have not yet found the time to scan all my film shots into my computer! I feel confident enough that I can do this otherwise I would not risk the happiness of one of my closest mates!

Thanks again all for your advice much appreciated.
