Wedding photography question - How much is too much?

Hi all,

A friend of mine is getting married next year and he's asked me a question about hiring a photographer. He's had quotes ranging from 700 to 900 pounds, which is a lot more than I remember mine being.

So: What is a reasonable price for a wedding these days?
And; can anyone recommend a photographer in the Stoke on Trent area?

Cheers all,

Noel

The price you pay will depend on how much your photographer will do - and the area you are in. If you want shots of the bride getting ready and shots of the evening do too, the time spent on location could be as long as 12 hours or more. Then you have the price of the album(s) - a good one is not cheap - and the time the 'tog will spend on processing.

The people I have most recently spoken to regarding prices average about 1500 all in for an all day job.

I recently spoke to a top pro who charges a minimum of 2500 for a wedding in England and more for abroad.

Spxxxx is in Chesterfield and has many threads on here with stunning wedding pictures

There used to be a photographer in Glasgow who advertised 99 photos for 99 for a wedding. He took three 35mm 36 exposure films and then handed them to the bride to take to the chemist or similar for processing. You could do the same with the card from a digital camera.

Re: Wedding photography question - How much is too much?

I don't do weddings, but that dosen't mean I haven't been asked. I will tell them right up front that i will go through and clean up the pictures with any effects they would like. Give them the originals on a dvd and the worked over ones on a dvd and one that I feel are the best of for printing. They have liked what I have to offer so far but i always seem to be busy on those dates. A lot of people know I have a camera and I have printed some events for them, so word of mouth came back to bite me. Where do these people come from. I don't do weddings,, One thing I am amazed at is that everybody mostly takes their own pictures now and I have only seen two people with good props taking some pictures. I would add up the cast of prints, ink and paper,,,then a little extra for me to put in the bubble gum machine. That's what i did with restoreing old photos after scanning,,,time consuming. I would probly do the same thing. I know my nefew has a hard time staying afloat with weddings, he does books, I think he should not.

700 - 900 sounds quite reasonable when you think of the time involved in photographing a wedding. You might be there from the bride getting ready, right through to the first dance. Then all the photographs have to be sorted and worked and sized ready for order and uploaded to a website that the photographer has to pay for and then add on the printing, which profits are dependant on mark up. Then you've got to have the right equipment and back up equipment and insurance and you have to be registered for tax, probably have to pay an accountant. All mounts up. I wouldn't want to do it.

I don't know what he charges but I would recommend Darren Washington in Stoke-on-Trent. You can see some of his work here
