Re: Weddings

All you have to remember is that with wedding photography you get one chance to capture what is supposed to be one of the most important days in the lives of the bride and groom. You can't predict the weather, the light, if people are going to be drunk or not, if all your camera equipment is going to work properly and then you have to not only take the photographs but you have to control and direct many people to get the job done.

Its very hard work but extremely rewarding when it all comes together.

As to insurance...even the most mild mannered bride and groom would think nothing of suing you if the shots are not to their expected standard irrespective of what may have caused the shots not to be up to scratch. Insurance (and a second camera body) help remove some of the pressure and stress, both are highly recommended in the wedding photography game

Re: Weddings

With weddings you really do have to have massive self confidence, you will have to control and direct on average 60-70 people, some of which do not want to have their photograph taken. It is very handy if you have a helper to pass lenses carry bags and get some candid shots as well, the last 2 weddings I have done I was alone and it was b####y hard work. Proper wedding photographers charge a fair amount of money for the work they do but they earn every last penny of it. I pay assistants around 100.00 and they earn that as well. The main thing an assistant earns is knowledge and that is worth more than the money I pay them. If your going into business it would be advisable to get some public liability insurance at the very least, if a customer trips whilst in the studio or burns themselves on your lights they WILL sue you.

Re: Weddings

Weddings are hard work and personally I find them exhausting yet exhilarating at the same time. Last year I said I would never do a wedding as I thought it would be too difficult and stressful but now I love them, everybody is happy (usually) and everyone looks their best. I now approach them as I would any other shoot and that helps to keep me calm, they are only stressful if make them so. I have got my first 'solo' wedding next week and have already got five booked for next year and I'm really looking forward to them.

Just remember the seven P's - Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents P!ss Poor Performance.

Re: Weddings

lol @ P!ss poor performance!

Im not to worried about telling people what to do (joking!) I am faily confident about talking to people i dont know and OH has said he will help where needs be, for example I have him doing the western show with me so I can cover more ground lol (not sure he knows what he is getting into yet lol) its more a case of being confident in my abilities, Animals no problems but people! lol

Re: Weddings

I agree with all the above -weddings are lucrative - but really scary - The last one I shot was with film - lotsa anxiety waiting on the lab! and I was just doing that one for friends - free (as a wedding present)- but still scared me -(turned out fine tho) - DSLRs help with the pre-development fears -can take a lot more pics and see a bit of what you have right then. Sounds like the suing part is about the same here in the states - that just drives up the prices you have to charge - just figure in some of your insurance costs in the price of the shoot .
If you are an adrenalin junkie - its a great thing to photograph a wedding - the adrenalin rush just doesnt feel good to me any more.
have fun.
Dan

Re: Weddings

its like everything though nowdays theres an element of risk, if someone can they will sue, the best or worst probably more appropriate, was a family suing a previous owner of a horse because the horse acted badly after they had bought him. disgusting if you ask me.
