wee problem

I have a problem ( ok ok i know i have loads but its a new one)....... i have been asked to be the official tog at a fairly big TKD competition.........as with these things I wont be allowed to use a flash ( i dont think) and because of the way the mats are set up there may be one or two i cant get that close to............. the lighting wont be brilliant.......
now i did shoot some on a class evening but i used flash and they thought they were brilliant........... the fastest lenses i have are the 50mm 1.8 which is fine but obviously its a prime.......... and the 20 - 40 2.8.. which doesnt allow me much scope for zooming................... I could of course refuse to do it but i dont really want to do that............... suggestions on a postcard and posted here would be good............

ta muchly as ever in advance

Re: wee problem

hi fiona,

IMO, 20 - 40 2,8 will be a good choice, with crop factor at 1.6 will be 38 - 64. set higher ISO, shd not be a big problem. my 2 cents

Re: wee problem

If you cannot use flash then you will need high ISO and preferably a Full frame camera to keep the noise down. Given that you cannot change camera set it to at least 800 ISO and hope that they are no too noisy. Could you visit the hal in advance and try out some shots in similar lighting?

Re: wee problem

I guess your lens choice will be dictated by the available light in the hall which I'm guessing could be quite dim.

Re: wee problem

So you can get a good shutter speed to capture peak action?

Re: wee problem

I would increase the ISO and perhaps consider using a monopod to support a larger lens...

Good Luck.

Re: wee problem

Fiona, if it helps, I have a sigma 70-210 F2.8 that you can borrow. I also have a tamron 105 f2.8. I'm guessing that you probably have lenses like these or probably better one but if either of these lenses would help you out, drop me a pm and I can meet you to drop them off.

Re: wee problem

TKD is a very fast paced sport; you really need shutter speeds in the region of 1/500 - 1/1000 sec to capture the action and if you're not allowed to use flash inside then that simply means you have to bump up the ISO.

The lighting should be fairly constant so shoot in fully manual mode, ensuring to pre-set your WB before you start. That way you'll reduce the amount of time (if any) you spend in post.

Having extensively shot martial arts my advice is to "shoot loose, crop tight"; frame the action so that you have the fighters from top to toe. Your 30D should be the camera of choice for this. Pair it with a 70-200 or as close to that range as you can get. Get a reasonable working distance between you and the action so that you can easily track it (hence the 70-200)

Do a Google Image search for "Taekwondo Olympics 2008" and you'll see some excellent examples that should point you in the right direction. Sports shooting is all about the emotion / reaction and - for combat sports - the moment of impact too.

Hope I've not covered ground you're already aware of

You had day light to work in? Lucky you.

I've shot a few demo events for the TKD school missus A used to go to and they were a complete mare Fortunately I did have the option of flash but tried to avoid it where possible.

IIRC I was at ISO 1600 for all of the shots in last year's event(s). Theatre lighting look bright but as we know, it isn't I need a camera that happily does ISO 6400. Where can I get a 1Div?
