Question what does interpolated mean?

Hello all

Some people have suggested I start to sell pictures online with people like Alamy stock, but when I looked at the terms and conditions for uploading images it suggested tht I use a filesize of around 50mb. None of the images ive ever taken get within even 15mb. It keeps mentioning interpolating, does this boost the quality and size of the image or summit like that??? Can I do it, or what would I need to do it, I have a goodish laptop, a Nikon D40x 10.2mp camera with RAW picture capability and Raw therapee, Picasa and Nikon Picture prodgect software to edit with plus the 2 that come as standard with windows.

Any help would be greatly aprreciated
Thanks
Toby

Re: what does interpolated mean?

If you save as JPEG it's very unlikely that your images will be over 10MB, but that is the compressed size and not the size when uncompressed for display. RAW files are also compressed (but it's usually lossless compression).

A camera with a 10MP sensor will produce 30MB images as 8-bit uncompressed TIFF, and 60MB as 16-bit TIFF. Many print libraries expect uncompressed (TIFF) files, so these are the sizes they are talking about.

You can upsize a smaller image by various interpolation methods, but an uncropped image from many modern cameras will probably be plenty large enough!

Re: what does interpolated mean?

Toby, interpolate means to increase the size of an image (blow it up) but at the expense of quality, because pixels are added, and thus the software has to guess what colours/tones these additional pixels should be. Most software (or printers) can do this reasonably well by assessing the existing + surrounding pixels, but when it comes down to it, it is still guessing, so will not be 100% accurate.

Try it + see, you might be pleased with the result. All you do is increase the canvas size + the software will interpolate in the background. You might be able to choose the method of interpolation, of which there are several, although this might be for printers more than software. If you do get a choice, choose to interpolate by "perceptual colour", as this will best match colours to the existing colours in the image data, which works the best for those who are not masters of colour management.

Toby if you search for 'Alamy' on here look out for posts by Gary Bagshawe who gives some good tips about uploading to Alamy

Re: what does interpolated mean?

Toby

To add to Charlotte's excellent reply, the type of image subject will have an impact on whether the interpolated (enlarging is up-sampling, reducing is down-sampling) image is good enough or not. Interpolation has less impact on images with less detail than those with lots of fine detail. For example, digital artists often paint a digital painting at a low resolution/size and then enlarge it using interpolation since the impact on the image is negligible (or in Painter, record the painting steps and then reapply them to a bigger canvas which isn't the same thing as interpolation). With detailed photos you have to be more selective of which images to enlarge.
Enlarging through interpolation ALWAYS impacts on the quality, as Charlotte makes clear, it is then whether the impact is too bad on a per image basis.
Down-sampling drops unnecessary image pixels which isn't usually as bad on the quality as up-sampling. One reason why when you reduce the size of an image for the web it can often look better (sharper and more local contrast) than the original!

There are numerous specialist programs for interpolation, Genuine Fractals is usually rated as one of the best.

Cheers

Les

Re: what does interpolated mean?

Strictly speaking, it's not necessarily increasing the size of an image but sampling a cell's neighbouring colours in order to arrive at the cell colour - usually associated with increasing the size of an image. Since this already happens in cameras with Bayer sensors (most cameras) for every image, further interpolation can rapidly degrade an image
