What else do I need?

I know I need an external flash but what other equipment should I look at for allround eventualities?

I want to be able to start doing some portraits so looked at the home studio kits but whats the minimum I can get away with?

I see a lot of people posing about doing outdoors photography with reflectors and saw a nifty 5 in 1 which looked good but how much would it get used?

At the min I have my camera, 2 lenses, 14-45 and 40-150 with the 2 x wotsit, 4 magnifyings fliters, my tripod and bad, notepad and pen! lol cleaning stuff, and 2 lense hoods.

Re: What else do I need?

As architects say light is free and outdoor portraits if the light and weather is good can be the best of all. Reflectors and fill flash will help a lot. Reflectors for portraits need to be big and really you need an assistant to hold them. I have a biggish 5 in one and it doesn't get a lot of outdoor use and it should. I don't own one but the tri-flectors are supposed to be the exception as they can be held by the subject to de-emphasise shadows. However, there is a reason why pro togs fly the models all the way to the bahamas for available light shoots. Our weather is hardly predictable and you don't want to have to shoot around midday. If you want predictable you need some kind of studio set up. An off camera flash and some kind of diffuser will produce pretty good results. But 2 heads are better than one and the good news is that there are few 2 head kits about that don't cost more than a good off camera flash set up for the dedicated flashes. I have said this elsewhere but proportional modelling lamps are really important. Of course a dedicated flash gun should always be near the top of your list for any camera.

You will probably get better results with these and make you and your subject feel more like it's a real shoot. If you can find them 2nd hand then, if you decide you don't like it or that you do and want to upgrade, you could resell and not lose much. A light meter that can do flash is a sound investment as well, I am not sure if they still make dedicated flash meters but if you are getting a meter get one that does both.

Of course you'll need to think about backgrounds props etc but these can be improvised for very little. Don't rule out chromakey, it's a great way with a digicam to easily drop models onto digital backgrounds. For conventional backgrounds white and black are the best places to start and any non shiny material will do. The cliched blue/grey/brown cloud backgrounds do still work and you will notice most studio shots are still shot with these. But these are very overpriced and take up a lot of storage if you want long enough for seamless full height.

Great advice from Vinny.

I'll go further and say that, if you can find a window that faces north, you need little more than a large newspaper page as a simple reflector...
