Re: What fits what?

Sigma, Tamron and Tokina all make lenses for the major brands of camera, especially Nikon and Canon, so you have a wide choice for most cameras.

However, the D40 and D40x have a limitation here. There is no in-body focusing motor, so you have to use AF-S compatible lenses. Some third-party lenses don't comply - for example Sigma's non-HSM models - and these can only be focused manually.

The Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX DC does have HSM and therefore should work fine, but I'd be grateful if a Nikonian could confirm this.

Re: What fits what?

Tokina, Tamron and Sigma all make for Nikon. I Would recommend for wide-angle
  • Sigma 10-20
  • Tokina 12-24
  • Tamron 11-18
and for a good zoom try the Tamron 18-200 or 18-250. I've had the 18-200 and can recommend it as a very versatile, walkabout lens. HTH.

Unfortunately neither Tamron nor Tokina work on the D40x

Re: What fits what?

I have the Tokina 12-24 and am very pleased with it, Shane (simpbow) has one too and am pretty sure he'll cofirm its a great lens. Its available for Nikon fit.

Usually if you look at Lenses online, the retailers will state what mounts there available for, i would say most Sigma, Tokina and Tamron lenses are available for Nikon mount, its worth always checking though, the manufactorers websites would be the best place for that. The retailer Onestop Digital do some very good prices, altough based in Hong Kong i've used them many times as has lots of members on Pixalo.

Re: What fits what?

Yes it's that focusing motor issue.

I'm also have a feeling that the Tamron 18-200 and 18-250 may not work, for the same reason ???

They have just released an 18-250 that will it's the A18N II model. Not sure if it's the same price as the one with the screw motor. If so, everyone will benefit from the quieter and faster focusing.

The following Sigma lenses will work.
  • 30mm f/1.4 EX DC
  • 150mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 180mm f/3.5 EX DG
  • 300mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 500mm f/4.5 EX DG
  • 800mm f/5.6 EX DG
  • 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC
  • 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG
  • 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
  • 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro
  • 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC
  • 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS
  • 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC
  • 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG
  • 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO
  • 100-300mm f/4 DG
  • 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG
  • 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG
