What is a photograph

What is a photograph?
I ask the question becuase one of the replies I got on the http://www.pixalo.com/community/phot...out-27690.html thread stated
Quote:
they dont look at all natural, the atempt seems well over cooked, to be honest they dont even look like photographs.
I accept that the images are stylised and not to everyones taste, and I don't have a problemm with the comment, but out of curriosity when does a "photograph" become "not a photograph?"
If an image is digitaly enhanced does that change its status, or is there a line not to be crossed when processing, ie. this side of the line photograph, other side of the line not a photograph.
Personnaly I believe that if a picture is taken with a camera then it is a photograph regardless of whether it is enhanced and manipulated beyond all recognition. But if the image is not a photograph after enhancement / manipulatiion, what does it become?

Re: What is a photograph

it becomes a digital image or a picture. I personally liked your images, but i do kinda agree that i wouldnt call them photographs as there is little left apart form the composition and subject matter of the original. BUT that doesnt mean they do not merit credit, as it is i think due. a lovely set indeed.

Re: What is a photograph

Well, part of what you say is right John but other parts not. Yes, if the image has been captured using light onto a sensitive medium then it is a photograph, that being the very meaning of the word: photo=light, graph=write.

On the other hand, you did by your own admission state that the church photo is only half of what you captured (the church itself) and the rest (the church reflection) is created in the computer using a plug-in - the Flood 'filter' (I put that in quotes because it isn't really a filter at all!) so that part of the image was never captured in the camera as such.

I quite liked your pictures as images and would consider them photograph-originated images. After all, surely you would admit that your whole processing of them is designed to not simply present them as photographs but as pieces of art-images. The camera did not capture them with their heavy processing effects, but of course it can also be argued that digital black and white shots are not as the camera captured them either (nobody in their right mind would use the black and white setting on a dSLR in my opinion!) but we are still happy to call them photographs.

The very term 'photograph' surely ranges across a broad gamut of effects and so forth. After all, if I held a leaf onto a bit of paper previously coated with silver-cromide solution, shone a torch on it and then developed the bit of paper, we'd get a photographically produced image. Would we actually call it a photograph? Well William Fox Talbot did the same thing and he certainly called it that so if it's good enough for one of the founding fathers of photography, I guess it should be good enough for us!

So, may I make a suggestion: stop worrying about whether it is a photograph, an image, a piece of art or whatever and ENJOY IT for what it is. You have produced some good work there, pictures that would sell very easily and happily be hung on a wall in people's homes. They couldn't care less whether it is out of the camera or heavily processed so why should you

Cheers,
Rob

Re: What is a photograph

I find your photographs to look like color tones of someone who wants to express an impression of what they see in that photograph,,,weather it changes from a photograph to a picture of what is of no real importance,,,that makes it an art form of a photograph with an artist view point., I personnally like all your photographs,,,you need one to go from there,,,,it's your style, be proud of it.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.
I think the only conclusion that can be drawn is that it's all down to personal preference.

Re: What is a photograph

I have looked at your Gallery and like what I see Im a great fan of photoshop and have been using it since version 5 I would say that I regard a Photograph as such if it is in its natural state be it in colour or desaturated sepia ect any other modifications cloned, HDR ( I know it dosnt actually change the landscape but if done right looks nice), images merged ect... ect... and I would class it as Digital Art which is by no means a put down to any photographers but before the onset of Digital cameras and programs like photoshop what you saw was what you got with film more or less.
Look on the bright side you can be regarded as a tog and an artist in the same breath
