What price digital file?

I'm thinking of adding an option to purchase a file rather than a print on my website & am trying to get an idea of what people (a) charge and (b) would pay.

I've found prices from 3.00 to 30.00!

Obviously, I want to organise a contract whereby purchasers can print for their own use, but not supply for publication. Could this be a minefield

Any views very welcome.

Re: What price digital file?

It could be a minefiled...

Are you going to be supplying the digital negative (so the raw file) or are thinking of processing the image and supplying that? If the latter then it likely that you will have to supply really large files (tiffs) at 300dpi for printing, especially if you have demanding clients. This usually means that ftp or emailing the files are out of the question and you then have to burn them to disk and post them to the clients...all this is extra cost for you both in materials and time.

Either way once you give away a large file without watermarking you are making it easier to have your copyright breached. Sure someone could scan a print that they bought and use that file but its a lot more trouble that its worth for the majority of people.

Lastly, you must make sure that your terms and conditions for the supply and use of digital files are very strict in order to protect your copyright. Where it can be used, by whom, how many copies can be made, if its going into a publication, how big that circulation is for the amount of money you have been paid, if they re-print or do a second, third or fourth run then you may expect additional payments etc...

Hopefully that will give you a little to think about

You're right, minefield!!!!

Think maybe I'll just stick to supplying prints and low res watermarked images for cycle club websites as advertising.

Re: What price digital file?

This one always leads me to the fridge for a beer! It is a particular problem for me as I shoot many sequences of surfing manoeuvres, and surfers always claim poverty! I have settled on offering prints from 5.00 for a 6x4 to 30x20 @ 32.00 (plus 1.95 p&p) as well as the option of a 3000 x 2000 pixel file @300 dpi for 12.00 (no p&p if sent by email).

This seems to be about right for my market as probably 70% of the orders are for prints/gifts. I even had one customer order 6 A4 prints and the 6 digital files!

I hope this helps, if not check out the fridge or wine rack for some stress relief!!

Re: What price digital file?

I've only sold one image this way. I supplied the image as a 300dpi A4 jpeg. Ready to print.
I charged 10 for the image for unlimited personal use and sent it via e-mail.
