Re: what shooting mode...

It is not so much a matter of pros and cons - the modes are for different purposes. Although there is a degree of overlap, Av is for when you want to control the depth of field, Tv (or S) is for freezing action or allowing some blur to suggest movement, and M allows you to have total control.

Some cameras also have pre-sets for portrait, sports, night, close-up etc when the camera settings will be weighted towards the most appropriate settings for these subjects.

I think you will find most people use Av mode most of the time.

Re: what shooting mode...

I use Manual pretty much all the time, with brief forays into other modes if the situation calls for it.

Manual with TV for sport. Don't necessarily do what others do, do what you need and are comfortable with

Re: what shooting mode...

I use A (Av for youse canon lot), almost exclusively. I use manual for more creative stuff, but often I find matrix metering deals well with situations, and I can easily switch to manual if not.

Re: what shooting mode...

Landscapes: Av - DOF is usually the prime consideration

Wildlife: Tv - usually got a telephoto attached, so shutter speed for poor light, show motion or freeze action become the prime considerations

Manual? Not if I can help it - I've got a perfectly good light meter which'll auto set one of the settings and I'm often shooting in rapidly changing light when altering manual is too slow (but I set exposure compensation based on what I think I'll need). Unfortunately Canon deem +/- 2 Exp Comp sufficient (my Sigma goes to +/- 3 and I use it!)

I do not know about the 350d but with the 40d you can set exposure comp and exposure bracketing at the same time so if you know which way you want to go from the meter reading you can get a bit more adjustment in that direction. Just a thought

Thanks! Can do so with the 350D - but I really don't want to take 3 pics where one'll do! Or rather, if I've got to take a number of images I'll wait for the multi-DOF image cameras (take one shot and it auto stores a number of images at various DOFs - exists already but poor res)

Re: what shooting mode...

I shoot mostly in manual. Before venturing to do that, I shot almost exclusively in Av mode, because DoF was the crucial factor in the type of photographs I was taking (mostly landscape).

Manual and autofocus during the day for sports and manual with manual focus for night shots.

Re: what shooting mode...

Use A most of the time unless I am using a long lens or shooting moving objects.

Then I adjust to give me what my brain thinks the shot looks like ( often a bit different from reality, er white balance for instance )

I used to be a bit uncertain until I dicovered Histograms now I am only confused!

Jake, that's not as important as what you want the shot to look like
