Question What software?

Ive had a few problems with Capture One Four so I've stopped using it & moved back to Rawshooter & Capture One LE 3.7.7 & Photoshop 6, also I've tried a few trials like Bibble, NX2 & LR2, I like them all but LR2s a crazy price, would i be better using Rawshooter & LE with Photoshop & buy a noise program or be better using an all in one like Bibble & NX2, thanx for any help on what i should do?

Re: What software?

Think it's all down to what S/W you get on with. Personally, use ACR, CS3 and NN as they do everything I want with the minimum of fuss

Re: What software?

I would upgrade to CS3 and look at what kind of control you gain. There is a new noise reduction filter under; filter/noise that works pretty good. Then build your inventory of software from there,,

I see you have Picassa. I used to use that but now have found I very much prefer the Fastone Image Viewer - a quite sophisticated program that has a lot of functions and best of all is FREEWARE well for home use at least

FastStone Image Viewer, Screen Capture, Photo Resizer ...

Re: What software?

I would go for Bibble Pro, especially since you'll get a free upgrade to version 5 later this year. You'll probably find that, with a few (free or cheap) plugins, you won't need second-stage processing at all. That will apply even more to v5 which has layers support etc. Bibble also has Noise Ninja built in, and that does a much better job than LR or CS3 which just scramble chroma noise.

I'd certainly think long and hard before committing to LR or Photoshop at current prices.

Re: What software?

Stick with Capture One LE until you upgrade your camera.

I use Capture One LE & CS3 with Noiseware Pro plugin.

I've never actually used Picasa, but it is highly recommended by others

When I first discovered the internet, and waaaay before I got into photography, I used an all-in-one graphics programme that sounds very similar to the FastStone one you mention. It was Irfanview and what a brilliant little app that is for people who need a FREE programme that can do all sorts of snazzy things with an image file. I haven't used it for years (although I've thought about downloading it again to see what it can do now) but I see it's still going strong, in fact stronger than ever.

Re: What software?

Just remembered, I have Nikon Capture NX as well, but I've never installed it ... I think it's been superceded now, but anyway can anyone say whether it's any good?

I've got it installed, but have not used it much. I think it is quite highly thought of by those that do use it. I am always intending to give it a proper workout, but never seem to have the time.

I'd better get my finger out before the upgrade arrives!

Yeah but I hardly ever need to: I shoot raw, process the raw in LR, export it to jpeg for web, automatically import it into CS3 to sharpen + any other tweaks I fancy at the time

A bit like yourself ...

I don't sharpen much in LR, I prefer to do it on the final jpeg version, rather than the raw (although I do do some in LR). This is advice I've picked up along the way + it's stuck. I like to open images in a 2nd programme so that I can see it still looks ok in a different prog ... it's just a thing I have, after I had prob's with images looking different in different programmes; however, LR + CS3 seem to show them the same, so it's academic, but just a habit/routine now. Sometimes I don't do anything in CS3, if an image looks ok as is.

Edit: I've tried shooting jpeg with the D3 (to save space) but wished on a few of the shots that I'd shot in raw, so now I think I'll stick to raw ... but I could change my mind on that
