Re: What is on your wish list?

Although not equipment, still photography related, I've got the camera & lenses now to exceed my skills, so a 3 day photography course with a serious pro who can help me jump up to the next level in my photography.

I'd put it towards a D200 at the mo.

Or a Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR from hK.

Re: What is on your wish list?

Let's see...

1. Canon EF17-40L or Canon EF-s10-20 (still havn't decided on this )
2. Canon EF100 macro or Sigma 150 macro (still havn't decidied on this either )
3. Canon 580 flash.

Alternative...

All towards a Canon 5D.

The first three are in my "to get" list anyway, but if I was "given" 1000 the thought of a 5D might be just too tempting to pass on.

If you are going that route, add the Tamron macro lense to your 'check out' list before you decide. I have never used one myself but it seems to get great reviews and write ups

Re: What is on your wish list?

If someone gave me 1K

Well if I could find another 50 it would have to be a Canon 70-200 2.8.

If not I would probably blow it on a backup body (30D).

Unless I come across a good 2nd hand offer it's really between these two for me... I'd automaticly go for the Canon in the 100mm range due to the addition of USM and the fact that it dosn't extend when focusing, it could also double as a portrait lens (and many use it as such). The Sigma is there because it has HSM and provides a greater working distance while still retaining f/2.8.

Re: What is on your wish list?

I'd use a few hundred quid to upgrade my 20D to a 30D and blow the rest on a 17-55mm 2.8 IS. Anything left over would go towards a paper and a cup of tea.

Nope, about 14 months old, think it's the on off switch, when you turn it on the motorised head keeps zooming and you need to take the batts out to stop it.

Going to order a 430 or 580 tomorrow

Re: What is on your wish list?

Sigma have a silly set price for out of guarantee repairs, for flash guns it something like 75 + VAT minimum and for not much more than that you can get a new model via the Ebay sellers or onestop It's a real shame as the Sigma flashes offer great value and features but I have recently seen a few reports of them going faulty.

I spoke to them last week and the guy was really quite helpful. He said send it back and they'd assess whether or not it was worth repairing. If not he claimed they would do a deal which would be significantly less than retail price. We'll wait and see.

Re: What is on your wish list?

Ahh well that sounds fair enough You would think that they would publish that sort of information though as it is good Page Ranking. I jumped ship from Sigma to Canon after seeing their repair charges so it may have kept them one customer if the information was readily available online.

Like you say it will be interesting to see what they say after they have looked at it.

Re: What is on your wish list?

1000? Is that all???

A pair of 8GB Extreme III CF cards for starters.. that chalks up 500 right off the bat... then probably Nikon's R1C1 macro lighting kit, so I could dabble more in product photography.

There: bank broken

Re: What is on your wish list?

I find that interesting that you are willing to use 8gb cards as a professional...are you not worried about the potential loss of images should you get a failure on one of the cards. I would have thought that more, smaller cards were a safer bet?

Re: What is on your wish list?

Steve

Modern CF card technology is now at a stage whereby they're very stable.. well, at least for the likes of Lexar and Sandisk - so I don't really have any qualms about using large capacity cards. You just have to make sure that you don't do anything daft like trying to remove a CF card from a camera whilst data is still being written to it and you'll be just fine

Also, software such as RescuePro (bundled with Sandisk cards) has negated my fear of such a thing happening: I tried running it for the first time recently and it pulled shots off my CF card that had been taken back in November! - this despite many formattings and shoots since then!

It must be said that a 4GB is generally accepted as the 'sweet spot' for professional work since, at that capacity, you can easliy back up a full card of shots to a single DVD disc.

With the advent of HD-DVD and Blu-ray technologies this will slowly change. My money is on HD-DVD insofar that it's completely backwards compatible with the current formats, and it's 16GB writeable discs will make a very handy way for me to back up shots from a pair of 8GB CF cards

Something else I'd love to see developed is a slim, HDD based beltpack that would allow you to shoot to card and simultaneously send the same shot to the pack's HDD. Wedding and event photographers would fall over themselves to buy such a device and - if they figured out a way to house an 802.11n transmitter in the same pack (with about a 200m range) - it would be THE killer accessory for the professional and enthusiast shooters.

Amazingly enough I was only thinking the same the other night when speaking to Steve about wedding photography & potential pitfalls of cards failing etc. Would agree fully it would be THE accessory for the pros.
