When are you ready..??

my question is this.?

when are you ready to sell a photo to someone. i:e a portrait..
i have been thinking recently that i would be happy for people to have my work on there wall.

i take it . it is a personal thing but just wondered at what stage others thought they were ready..

i am sure that after i sell my 1st print it will feel right that someone is happy to pay for my work..

just trying to gauge what others have done..

thanks for looking

Re: When are you ready..??

I think you are ready when others would be happy to pay for and hang your work on their walls, not when you would be happy for them to do so. You'll probably find that you are more demanding than others and what you will find fault with, others, especially if it is portraits of them will be very happy with. Not everyone has a photographers eye

The difficult part is marketing your work and not undervaluing it by selling yourself or the final product too cheaply.

Re: When are you ready..??

For me it was when people asked to look at cycling shots I was doing for myself, I printed off some contact sheets and then when it was difficult to do as more wanted to look, I set up a basic website with just space for 300 shots which went well and now have space for 3000 and am being booked for races and have also been booked for the 2009 British Time Trial Championships.
I set my prices according to other event sites selling a similar product, keeping them pretty much in the middle.

Re: When are you ready..??

Sold 7 so far this year and another 14 ready to order so Im Ready when they want to pay . As Steve said you will be your own worst critique I did a shoot for some friends and their family they loved them all even the one's i hated the only thing stoping them buying them all is cost . So Question What do you do when they have bought about ten and been a good customer they ask what will you do with the one they have not bought ? could sell them on a disk but what should I charge ?? .plus they have offered to get me into the horse shows this year plus doing some of them at their stables.

Re: When are you ready..??

Have to say, if they've bought 10 images and just not bought one, I'd pop it in as a discount, even if it's just on a disc, not as a print.

this has to be the biggest and most asked question ever on any forum/ club/

" what is my work worth " i know people will say things like what do you earn at work go from there../ ask around at the local studios see what they charge..

at the end of the day its down to one person and one person only..

so if i said i was charging 50 quid for a a4 some would say thats to much some would say thats to cheap..

oohhh wwoooo what to do .... what to do....

Re: When are you ready..??

Oh, didn't realise there were than many more, I thought from the previous post that there was only one not ordered. If you'd given them a discount already, that is enough. If they've bought prints from you, they will probably scan them anyway. I have to confess, my 1/2 sister does that, she will probably buy 1 shot from a shoot with her children and then scan it and print it very badly, for the rest of the family. although not me, as she knows what I think of her and her husband for doing it .

Or just blonk them on a disk and say "here,s the rest of the images for 55
on disk" and saves you printing and gives them a good deal IMHO.

Re: When are you ready..??

It depends also on whether you see your aim in photography as selling pictures. I have sold the odd picture in the past and have been offered money for pics since but have so far not wished to get involved with selling pics. This is because photography is a hobby to me. Before I retired, my normal employment paid much more than I could ever earn in photography so it was no contest. As I have enjoyed photography as a hobby, since retirement, I have been keen to continue as a hobby. However, there is an opportunity next summer to offer pictures for sale in a Gallery so I may well give it a go.

So back to your original question. Are you prepared to move on from a hobby? Also you do need to ensure that you can produce prints that won't fade after a few months. Once you start on this, it could expand if people like your photographs. You also need to remember that the photographs that the public buy are not necessarily the photographs you would choose to take.

Dave

Re: When are you ready..??

Hmm, yes,no problem for me,enjoy my DSLR tremendously ,but don,t kid myself I,m good enough to sell.
But as Dave says, if you move that extra step, will it become a chore and not a hobby or pleasure.
