Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

There seems to have been alot of preceptions about the use of a 50mm. Being a rather young grandfather with a sizable lot of grandkids, I look and see the shots I took when on the ground, in a group and just about anywhere else with the kids running never holding still and geez.. Just to come about and say that my 50mm one handed shots of kids in action are about as good as it gets. Portraits yes, but kids at there own. Small compact and sharp as a bright smiling kid. In all, a 50mm has it's place, mine is on the belt when I might leave the telephoto behind because I just get tired of useing it, and want to slim down to one size fits all. When I use it, I shoot different as to how and where I stand. It changes the hunt for that picture and the way I look at things because a telephoto gave me more leaway.

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

Since buying my 50mm it is very rarely off the camera in fact I would say 95% of my shots are with this lens now. I actualy enjoy walking up and down to frame the shot rather than zooming in and out. I am pretty sure that my next lens purchase will be a prime lens rather than a zoom.

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

I have a 50mm f1.7 lens which I've used maybe once or twice! OK, so it's an M42 but I really thought I'd use it a fair bit (and got it prior to my brother's wedding - but never used!). Use my 105mm for portraits - kids notice me less as I stay more out the way!

My 50mm f/1.8 is being delivered today. I am pretty psyched to determine its range of use.

My telephoto's are as good but there is a defference in the frame and how close you were lucky to get and not have a funny looking smile with the 50mm. But a good kid picture for me is one when they don't know your there, your right.

I love my 50mm f/1.8 for taking portrait shots indoors , just using the natural light from a window .... so much nicer than flash in my opinion Then just look at the final quality of the images from the excellent optics

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

I read an artical once where the 50mm was suited for street shooting as the distance from side to side was a good range for the lens. So I brought it with me into Disneyland with a 24mm just incase, and found that I was alittle tight in alot of spots, but found for the kids the space of about 20 to 50 feet was ideal for them. So that in mind, what would an ideal space be for the 50mm ?

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

With a 1.6 crop sensor the angle of view on the 50mm would be equivalent to an 80mm on a 35mm FF.
so for a 50mm equivelent angle of view on a 1.6 crop sensor you would need a 32mm lens.

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

I have been useing my 85mm and swap with my 100-400. My 85 would give me about 100mm. Point being that I like that range the 50mm gives,,"I like small primes". I have a trip this weekend that's along a narrow river trail, "thus bring less" in lenses per say. I want to use my 50 with my new netural density filter, as much as I like my 85,,,I have, I guess, lens block as to witch one to leave behind. Right now I will use my 50 and 100-400, but my 85 gets left out,,,I need discipline,

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

I love my 50mm f/1.8, but prefer the zoom capability above the aperture. I generally have a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4.0 lens for general use, but the 50 is my saving grace for concert and low light shots.

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

Well then,,
I went on my little trip, brought my fifty with my neutral density filter, never got out the zoom and traded the wife for her ultra wide and wouldn't give it back, ha-haa...
Did take some pictures later, I will leave my filter on my fifty for now, need to learn how to use it. I got my fifty the same reason you like yours Chris, they are fast for low light.
very cool

I got the 50mm 1.4 and really cannot heap enough praise on it for low light and indoor shots using the available light, but find it a tad soft wide open.

Re: Where's a good place to use a 50mm ?

Here's the first shot I really liked even though it is really soft. A very shallow DOF right on the end of her nose,,,,maybe alittle off,,,I was sitting on the floor in the doorway and my Granddaughter walked right up and looked in the lens.
