Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
Was just looking to buy a book on Lightroom & noticed good reviews against related books by Scott Kelby & Martin Evening. I don't want to buy both, so anyone have a preference & reasons why ?

Re: Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
I've got the Martin Evening one and I think it is good, even though I've not put much of it into practice.
I have Kelby 's CS2 book and that is also good, but I don't like his writing style. Just a personal thing but it steered me away from him and towards Martin Evening for the Lightroom book. Can't you get to a bookshop and check them both out? When doing this, I usually try to find something I know fairly well and see how the different authors deal with it, then choose the one nearest to my way of working or the one I am more comfortable with. Chances are that I'll latch onto other stuff easier if the author is on my wavelength.

Re: Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
I have books by bothauthors and whilst I am not a fan of Kelby's 'humour' his books are very good for real life hints a tips. I find Martin Evening's books too dry and very heavy going, he explains things reasonably clearly enough but does not say why he is doing something, the type of image it would be suited to or what sort of effect/finish you get with the final image.

Re: Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
I like Martin Evening,,I like the direct glitch
,,it can be hard to find good reading for what you need to hear,,My work outside of photography is very direct, i guess that's why Martin is smooth to me...Good luck on finding an author, I'm looking all the time for people, book stores and such. I just put down a book by Lee Frost for quick reading about filters. I like him too. For those of you who need to sneak into the book store and look around, no more fiddle faddle, I would like to hear if you find a favorite or interesting person. Out side of that, my monthly magazine ![]() Boofers |

Re: Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
I'm a Big Fan of Scott Kelby I have his book and find it very easy to follow and learn, like hacker said, Kelby puts a little humor to everything wich makes it fun thats why you learn a little easier. Martins book I have looked thru the pages at Barnes and Noble and found it a harder to follow.
I also like Kelbys Photography a lot more than Martins. Ive compared their work and I would like to use Kelbys training over martins. IMO |

I've used Martin Evening for Photoshop CS2 & although it was very good, I like the idea of Scott putting some of the teaching in to practical examples. Think I'll plump for Scotts for Lightroom & see what I think.

Re: Who's photography books do you prefer - Scott Kelby or Martin Evening ?
I like the Scott Kelby photoshop book and it's real world practical approach it definitely improved my workflow. I've never read one of the Martin Evening books. The other big gun is Deke Mclelland; he can really grate and has become a caricature of himself especially on the Total Training DVDs but, The Bible is one of the few books that you can look up any function and see what it's for how to use it, it's strengths and weaknesses and decide if it's something you will need.

I've got the Scott Kelby CS2 for photographers and it is so easy to follow, even for a bit of a dunce at photoshop like me
