Thinking of buying new wide angle lens for my D70 already got 18-70mm kit lens & 70-210mm nikon both very good lenses, i thought about nikon 28mm, nikon12-24mm & sigma 10-20mm all very good lenses but stuck on what one to buy, my choice at the minute is nikon 28mm but undecided , anyone else have info that might help!

Re: wide angle lenses.

I've got the 10-20mm and I love it.

Downsides are can't add filters without the filter body causing probs. I had to get a hoya pro1 digital uv filter coz it's the lowest profile I could find. It's also got a bit of inbuilt vignetting but I don't mind that too much - for some situations I even like it.

the 28 you are looking @ isn't very wide btw (as wide goes). Your 18-70 is wider.

I had the option to get the nikon 12-24 on nikon staff discount for £500 but even at that price I don't think the £200 over the sigma was really worth it. I decided I'd prefer the extra width over the alleged better quality of the nikon.

nikonians have a useful review of the main wides available...

12-24mm Nikkor
10-20mm Sigma
11-18mm Tamron
12-24mm Tokina

Re: wide angle lenses.

Hi, I have The Sigma 10-20 EX and I’m very pleased with it, the extra 2mm coverage over the Nikon 12-24 is really useful. I have not had the slightest problem with it and I’m fairly picky. As has been said it’s best to use the ultra thin filters. I get mine from Hong Kong via E-bay at a fraction of the UK price. The only other thing, get a Nikon lens centre pinch cap (LC77) so the cap can be removed with the lens hood on and possibly a genuine Nikon back cap (also E-bay).

Re: wide angle lenses.

28 isn't that wide as said but if you want something a bit faster than the 18-70 and wider than a 50 check out the sigma 30 1.4

I have the nikon 12-24 - most of the images, esp the kimmeridge ones @ PixMad Galleries - Seascapes are taken with it - not that it will tell you much abt the image quality at that resolution but if you click on the little green 'i' at the top of each image it'll display the focal length underneath the image

I like the lens but whether it's worth the extra over the others is ano matter..

The Sigma 10-20mm is my favourite lens - it's a corker, highly recommended here too!

I opted for the Sigma 10-20 on my Nikon D80. Very pleased with it.
