Winterizing my camera

I do alot of winter hiking and snow shoeing. This will be my first winter with a camera. I would like to take pictures while hiking on real cold days, but don't want to harm a lot of exspensive gear. Any care tips for carrying and useing the camera in cold weather would be greatly apresiated. Thank you

Re: Winterizing my camera

Keep batteries warm - that is, in a pocket. Take precautions to minimise condensation and don't use the camera when condensation is most likely to form. Make sure that your exposure is corrected for snow shots - that is 1 to 2 stops over what the camera is reading.

Re: Winterizing my camera

I always make sure the camera is in a camera bag kept outside any coat and never under a coat (see Graham's comment on condensation) and anyway, digitals don't mind the cold (but do mind heat!)

Re: Winterizing my camera

I can only endorse the comments made so far. My other tip is to carry two batteries for your camera. Keep one in the camera and the other in an inside pocket. If the battery fades swap them over and keep swapping back and forth as needed. It is amazing how much capacity a battery loses as the temperature drops.

Re: Winterizing my camera

Just been out with mine, in a thin satchel type bag...............no probs at all, my only problem was trying not to squash my camera when I kept slipping up, a technique that I soon mastered

Re: Winterizing my camera

And when you get back to digs.home....Dont take the camera straight into a warm atmosphere,as condensation can build up inside the camera......
let it acclimatise SLOWLY
