Re: Workflow

Hi there.

You do not give much detail about what you are doing. Raw to print ?, Jpeg to web ? etc. etc

In this case can I suggest a web search. Putting "Digital workflow" into Google turned up almost a quater of a million hits. The first couple of pages look to be quite useful. I did not review then all

Re: Workflow

  • Shoot RAW
  • Import through Lightroom to dedicated folder, adding keywords , meta data as required
  • 1st pass through shots in LR, "X"clude rubbish shots & delete
  • Develop shots in Lightroom for WB, exposure, crop etc.
  • Add extra keywords per shot if required
  • Any additional tweaks to Photo done in PS, via LR to ensure copy is tracked

Re: Workflow

I wrote an app called CardWatch which watches for the insertion of a card or camera with images on it - It takes care of a lot of the file management for me.
  • Shoot Raw
  • Use CardWatch to copy to a target folder based on M:\Photography\<current year>\<yyyy-mm-dd> - <event description>\ (I use American date formats coz they are better for sorting folders in the order I did the shooting)
  • CardWatch generates JPGs which are dumped in a M:\Photography\<current year>\<yyyy-mm-dd> - <event description>\jpg\ folder.
  • Once it's finished moving/copying the files from my card to the target folder, CardWatch then loads: -
  • ACDSee in the JPG folder
  • Adobe Bridge in target folder
  • Photoshop CS2.
So that's that lot done.

My actual file by file workflow is pretty simple.
  • Load the RAW from Adobe Bridge into CS2
  • Do my RAW processing (ACR) - different types of processing depending on the image.
  • In CS2 I do me curves, levels, filters and sharpening - all in layers so it's non-destructive.
  • The PSD is saved as the original filename (based on the RAW filename) then the description of what the shot is. e.g. DSC_5893_LochTay.psd
  • Jpgs have the exact same filename but, obviously, a different extension. e.g DSC_5893_LochTay.jpg

I'm a bit anal about my file naming conventions but it's useful to be able to find the original RAW file just from the filename of the finished JPG. Especially so after years have gone by and the originals have been archived.

Re: Workflow

  • Shoot Raw
  • Transfer files from Camera to month/year folder
  • Use Bridge to quickly delete unwanted (40%)
  • Convert to DNG & Rename files
  • Enter keywords and Copyright data
  • Stack groups for stitching or HDR
  • Use Bridge to rate pics and apply colour labels
  • Use Adobe Raw but only high star ratings
  • Save as 16 bit Tiff
  • Edit in CS3 as necessary
  • Save as 16 bit PSD with layer for a few complex pics
  • save the rest as 8 bit flattened Tiffs for printing
  • Back up, Back Up and Back Up
