Re: World Cup photographers?
Probably a 400mm f2.8 and a 135mm f2.8 Around £5500.00 worth

Re: World Cup photographers?
With me being in the CPS and based in Munich I got an invite from Canon to the pre World Cup press party. I chose not to go as my German is not up to it yet and I don't think I could have bluffed enough for the whole evening not to have got caught out. As it was also a penguin suit do, I doubt there would have been much time to play with the big boys toys anyway. The Mrs wanted to go though

Re: World Cup photographers?
Thanks Gary, Steve. But why a prime 400 and not a long zoom?

Re: World Cup photographers?
Because usually primes are sharper and in the longer ranges they tend to be available at larger apertures - so cope with light better, also alot of these photographers will have a couple of bodies, one with a decent range lens and one for closer work.

Re: World Cup photographers?
Thanks Warspite, I understand that. I just thought a zoom would give more latitude for covering such distances.

Re: World Cup photographers?
As Warspite has said, most will have two bodies and the second one will most likely have a shorter (possibly zoom) lens attached. It gives them the best of both worlds.

Re: World Cup photographers?
All the top lenses are primes really. And thats one of the reasons I bought my Sigma 120-300 2.8 - it acts like a 300 2.8 prime, plus is has the zoom! Fantastic for motorsport photography imo.

Re: World Cup photographers?
i think nikkon are the only people to make a fast super telephoto in the 200-400 f4. trouble is that even at f4 this is too slow. shooting at even one stop slower may make the difference from 1/500 to 1/1000 which may nail the crucial shot.

Re: World Cup photographers?
They will probably have a 400mm F2.8 L on one body and a 70-200mm F2.8 L zoom on the second. They may also have a 1.4x converter on the 70-200mm.

Re: World Cup photographers?
What colour are the top range Nikon lenses, are they grey/white like the Canon L's? If not, its a good advert for Canon gear at this world cup.Are the Nikon photographers at home trying to sort out the dodgy Nikon white balance in photoshop on their photos, i jest of course, i know someone with a D2x..very impressive indeed...I too have been looking at the photography side instead of the footy...it's the photographic equivalent of a muso, when i go see a gig im always looking at what pedals the guitarists are going through...sad hey.
