Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

OK last question for today. With so much information on the web & such great forums as this, is it worth still trying to find a local camera club to join ? I would really appreciate any advice from people who post on here & are in a club.

Got to go.... the wife thinks I'm on some dodgy chat room

Why not try your local club and see if they do your thing. What can you loose? I have been a member of my club in Manchester for over 40 years so they must be doing something right.

Thanks Bigmna. Problem is I don't have much spare time , well the wife won't give me much time , but you are right I should probably just try it. Was just wondering if people get enough from forums like this these days ?

Personally speaking, yes I do, I take any bits of info that I think will help me from all the forums I frequent then then turn off the PC and go out and try them... if it works, great, if it dosn't I can come straight back online and ask everyone "why the heck didn't it!" and I don't have to wait untill the next club night to do it.

...saying that, there's alot to be said for seeing things explained and done infront of you aswell as trying things yourself while having someone there as you do it incase you need advice, these are things you should get from camera club. As advised above, go down and see if it's the kind of place that you'll get something from, if yes then give it a go, I'm sure the wife'll let you out just one more night

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

You'll have to go along to any clubs near you and see what they're like for yourself really. Some are great and like real world versions of this place, where the photography and friendship is most important and it doesn't matter one bit what you like to shot or what you shoot it on.

Others are just terrible and little more than a weekly peeing contest where it's all down to pecking order and how much ££ you have in your kit bag.

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

Camera clubs certainly have their place and many people have gained knowledge and skill under the guidance of these clubs. Internet sites like Pixalo are basically a way of forming a global camera club, were you can chat to others, show off your latest works and get feedback and praise. Advice is free but the main benefit as Sonsey pointed out is that the response times are almost instant, you donít have to wait until the next meeting to find answers.

Mind you itís difficult for us to all nip down to the local together at the end of the night for a few beers

There are no silly questions here, only questions that you may not know the answer to

Please don't be afraid of asking anything photography related, we will do our best to give you the correct answer and always treat you with respect. It doesn't matter what level of photography you feel you are at, your welcome here.

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

I think the point has been well made that camera clubs vary between the excellent and the awful.

What I will say is that it's far easier to explain the workings of your modern DSLR to a complete newbie sitting side by side with a camera to play with, so if you can find someone at your local club prepared to do that it can save you a lot of head scratching in the early stages.

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

I tried a club once, but it was full of anoraks ...no offence to any club goers. People on here seem much more with it. As others say I expect all clubs are different.

On the day I went for the 1st time they spent 10 minutes deciding who was taking minutes etc, then they expected the newbies to go make the coffees & serve them all out with biscuits !!! Can you believe the cheek of it.

Can you beat that !!! ?

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

The thing that put me off joining my local camera club was the fact that the majority of the members are men over the age of 50. Not that I have anything against men over the age of 50, but it's quite intimidating when you're a female in her early 30's and there aren't any other young or female people there.
I feel that everything I have ever wanted to know, I can just ask on forums and get a variety of answers and helpful advice.

Must admit there aren't enough women in the clubs. It's a shame it's male dominated.

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

That is actually another good question, we see many female photographers when out and about and there is no reason why photography should be male dominated so what is it that clubs and forums seem to be populated mainly by males?

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

I went along to my local club but it wasn't a great success. As soon as they saw I had a DSLR most of them expected me to teach them, the rest were of the vocal 'digital is cheating and for lazy photographers' brigade. I wanted to pick up some ideas and tips from experienced photographers (I was the youngest by at least 25 years!).

I've found that there are a few websites that are more like the sort of thing I'd hoped for in a RL club. but unfortunately it does mean no beer at the end of the night

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

I joined a camera club to get access to a darkroom. It was the Vauxhall Motors Camera Club, but Vauxhall wanted to discontinue it, so they gave the club all of the kit. That included a proper darkroom, a pro slide copier, a three head Courtenay flash studio and a five head tungsten studio plus lots of other gear.

Sadly, just after I joined, Vauxhall wanted the building back, but they let the club have all of the kit. We used to meet in the local rugby club, and we could still use the studio setups (put up and dismantled every month on club night), and we had a waiting list of models - I kid you not! - but we never found another darkroom. My job makes me keep odd hours, and gradually, I went to the club nights less and less. Not kept up my membership.

Club v internet. both have their own advantages, and I suggest they complement rather than rival each other. I think a club has the advantage that it gets you out, you can go out on shoots together, or organise shoots that you would not usually be able to do as an individual, and whilst I would not say that you cannot make on-line friends, to actually meet, have a drink, discuss as a group and the general social aspect makes it worthwhile.

Re: Is it worth joining local Camera Club ?

I joined the local club this year and it was there that I was directed to the forums!
Good friendly advice and competition and very interesting if you have a thick enough skin to see one's work judged and compared with others.

I have learn a lot and had the chance to help others - yes I am over 60 but share with all ages.
