would u believe
I went into jessops the other day with the intent of getting a cokin filter set and a couple of filters. preferably a polariser and graduated ND filter........ so..... had the filter set and adapter for 58mm....... £28..........
went to the desk to ask for a cokin polariser for it.............. £59.99...............I would have fallen off my chair had i been sitting.............. asked the price of a graduated ND........... they had none....... not a single one. and then they said that Cokin had NO graduated ND's on their catalogue list......... couldnt believe it...... especially the price of the polariser... i thought cokin filters were meant to work out cheaper ! i quickly put everything back, picked up a hoya screw in polariser and a 1gb Cf card for LESS than the cokin polariser on its own. and still dont have a graduated nd! and now no vouchers left to buy it! lolFi |

Re: would u believe
I'm with you there Fiona, filters are not cheap. I've been wanting a couple of ND Grad's myself for quite a while now, but haven't gone for it yet. Cokin filters don't pretend to be cheap, but they are good. If you want expensive, check out Lee Filters

Re: would u believe
The prices can be expensive, especially from the high street stores. from your post it appears as though you had vouchers that you wanted to redeem but even so the fact that Jessops didn't have the stock adds weight to the fact that their business is suffering not just on prices but on having stock. Many people have admitted that they will use places like Jessops for the quick need items (and pay a premium for that service) but when they have not even got stock what chance of survival do they have

Re: would u believe
Just looked at the cokin web-site. These are the grad ND's listed:
Grey G1 ref 120 G2 ND8 ref 212 G2 light ND2 ref 121L G2 med ND4 ref 121M G2 soft ND8 ref 121s G2 full ND8 ref 121f There are also a variety of coloured grads too. This is their explanation of the various strengths: ND2 reduces amount of light to 50% ND4 reduces amount of light to 25% ND8 reduces amount of light to 12.5% in other words, ND-2 absorbs 1 F-stop of light. ND-4 absorbs 2 F-stops of light. ND-8 absorbs 3 F-stops of light. HTH

Re: would u believe
Fiona ,Check out the KOOD range of Graduated ND range. They have a range which are a direct & fully compatible with the COKIN P series.
Hilton Photographic have some in stock from £7.99. Other suppliers you may find via Google search. I am using Kood now 67mm and have in the past for my film camera. They are manufactured in Japan and I have found them excellent quality. My very first digital camera was a minolta 303d with a 28 mm screw fitting to the lens. Kood were the only manufacturer to make and supply a Circular Polorising filter this size at the time . The filters are all glass with a metal anodised black frame and excellent optical quality. thanx OP.... jessops were trying to sell me a kit with the holder, a 58mm adapter,. and ONE yes ONE..... warming filter. for all of £27.99 no grads were mentioned, so i told them not to bother. Unfortuantely I used my vouchers and dont have cash for anything else, so they will have to wait...again! lol, but i did at least get a screw in polariser cos i wasnt going to pay £60 for the cokin one as well as the £30. for the holder! Re: would u believe
Fiona - going on from Brian's post, I have today visited a company I have recommended previously, SRB of Luton (now merged with Griturn and called SRB-Griturn). I've used them over the years and the have very good prices and will happily give advice. They make their own resin filters to a very high standard.
I wanted a Hoya CP, but they were out of stock. They recommended the ROOD. The only difference being it is not muti-coated, and the 77mm was £46.20. The 58mm CP is £23. They said they have sold hundreds, and never had a complaint. They also said that if I used it and was not satisfied, they would give a full refund. They have an on-line shop and have a downloadable catalogue that is packed with filters and other accessories, (step-down rings, wrenches, blowers and all sorts of other things) and advice on the care and maintenance of filters too. They also stock grad ND's compatible with the Cokin system for £12.50. |

Re: would u believe
Yes DabHand16, SRB is where I purchased my Kood filters from. Also they make their own frames in house to order if not in stock. I'm not sure if this is the case now they have linked up with Gritum.

Re: would u believe
As far as I'm aware, they have reduced their own manufacture of filters to resin odd sizes that are not available commonly from other makers. I guess this is not the only industry that in the current world trading situation finds it cheaper to buy in rather than manufacture. However, they are always willing to help you out if you have a particular need or problem, and I think they still make mountings and other stuff.
I'm sure they would not stock filters that were no good, so I'm happy to try the KOOD on their say so. |

Re: would u believe
I agree. I do like the Kood filters especially my Polarising ones from SRB. There is always a chance if you purchase a Hoya on the web (ebay) that it may be a suspect copy. Another source for them is Bristol Cameras a 77mm Kood CP is £42 + £5pp 58mm Kood CP is £ 22 price includes vat, although I have not tried this supplier
