This is an observation which I made as soon as I joined pixalo, and now that I've kinda settled in, I feel I can raise with the crew:
Urban, Abstract + Still Life Photography have all been lumped together into one 'category'. This may have been initially because there weren't enough uploads to warrant a category each, I don't know. However, they are not, and should not be, linked at all, as they are very different subject types, and it seems an odd combination for a single category. Please could they be split into their own separate categories? As things stand, it is very confusing browsing this three-in-one category, and you have to go through a load of irrelevant pictures if you want to browse, say, still life. I feel quite strongly about this incongruous mixture of subject types within this 'category'. There are definitely three categories in there, fighting to get out - please liberate them?

Re: Photo Sharing Categories
As you say the categories where set up at the beginning when we first opened Pixalo. At that time our membership base was tiny in comparison to what it is now and the number of pictures uploaded reflected that. We were always aware that too many cats would leave them all sparse and bare and would be counter productive.
As to changing the categories now...the Crew will discuss it and let you know ![]() |

Re: Photo Sharing Categories
For what it's worth (probs not a lot!) I entirely agree with charlotte on this one, those are all big subjects so having one for each would be worthwhile.
Having said that I recognise there are technical limitations, we can't have a separate category for every popular genre as there just isn't space. The total pics for these three is only the same as Portraits on their own so I woner whether abstract and still life should be one and urban another. I personally think macro should have its own group as it is one of the most popular genres for enthusiasts and we see thread after thread of people talking about macro lenses and so forth. The thing is, macro often fits into the abstract category but by no means always. As an example: in the macro photography monthly comp, the fork prongs would definitely sit happily in the abstract category but the winning shot of the leaf would not. I note that Sport is a much less used category than any other. It is mostly motor sport which is no real surprise. I think the PIMP that photo category is getting used less and less simply because it is becoming more and more common to see pictures pimped in the main threads. I would hate to lose this thread though as it allows for radical pimping rather than simply 'improvements on a theme' type stuff in the threads. Thanks for bringing this one up charlotte. Definite scope for some thought methinks. Cheers, Rob

Re: Photo Sharing Categories
Thanks for your supporting input on this, Rob.
I think the total no. of pic's in 'Urban, Abstract + Still Life' is relatively low because it's off-putting to use this combined category the way it is. I think that if it is split three ways, then more people will be keen to upload these types of photo. Abstract and Still Life are only similar if you don't care much for either I agree that Abstract is perhaps the least popular, but it is a good catch-all category for photo's that perhaps don't fit into any other category, so I think it needs to be on its own. As does Still Life, definitely. And Urban too!I agree with Rob's suggestion for a Macro category as well, as this is becoming increasingly popular. |

Re: Photo Sharing Categories
So it's just me that noticed that?
![]() And, for the record, I do a fair few Abstracts, a goodly few Urban and very rarely do Still Life! |

Re: Photo Sharing Categories
Ok the verdict is in....
The Crew will make the suggested changes to the Gallery Categories in the next day or so and sort out the already submitted photos into the most relivant sections. This will take some time to complete so don't go shouting about this or that photo is in the wrong section until we have completed our work ![]() |
