Thank you all for the comments. I used HDR to crack the exposure problem.
Here's another one from the same area, this was taken later in the evening.

Thanks guys Marjus and Kevin.
I used Picturenaut, which is fairly easy to use and gives natural looking results. Its free, so you can download it and give it a try. There is only one big problem with it: it does not recognise raw files, so you have to convert them to 16 bit tifs first. |

Me again
The more I look at the first image, the more I like it; both the lighting + the composition are great, and you managed to get such depth that my eye is drawn in + follows the shoreline, right to the far trees, as if I just walked the length of it. I find the image rather calming.

Like the first shot, really nice. Find the second a bit dark in the trees.
Not heard of Picturenaut, I'll have to give it a try . I use Photomatix, which does recognise the RAW files of my camera, find that fairly straight forward to use, though it's not free, except for a trial version which watermarks things.
