Dark Satanic Mills

Not quite Jerusalem, but Yorkshires very own jewel in its industrial crown.

In 1848 Salt became mayor of Bradford. He tried hard to persuade the council to pass a by-law that would force all factory owners in the town to use new smoke burners. The other factory owners in Bradford were opposed to the idea. Most of them refused to accept that the smoke produced by their factories was damaging people's health.

When Titus Salt realised the council was unwilling to take action, he decided to move from Bradford. In 1850, Salt announced his plans to build a new industrial community called Saltaire at a nearby beauty spot on the banks of the River Aire. Saltaire, which was three miles from Bradford, took twenty years to build. At the centre of the village was Salt's textile mill. The mill was the largest and most modern in Europe. Noise in the factory was reduced by placing underground much of the shafting which drove the machinery. Large flues removed the dust and dirt from the factory floor. To ensure that the neighbourhood did not suffer from polluted air, the mill chimney was fitted with Rodda Smoke Burners.

At first Salt's 3,500 workers travelled to Saltaire from Bradford. However, during the next few years, 850 houses were built for his workers. Saltaire also had its own park, church, school, hospital, library and a whole range of different shops. The houses in Saltaire were far superior to those available in Bradford and other industrial towns. Fresh water was piped into each home from Saltaire's own 500,000 gallon reservoir. Gas was also laid on to provide lighting and heating. Unlike the people of Bradford, every family in Saltaire had its own outside lavatory. To encourage people to keep themselves clean, Salt also arranged for public baths and wash-houses to be built in Saltaire.

" So can you remove the colour comments on your text " is one possibility

Or

" I could switch colour schemes so it hurts my eyes "

or

" I could leave Pixalo is another "

Good set there John and thanks for the background info as well, made for very interesting reading.

You've captured something of the depressing feel of the mills without the pictures actually being depressing.... if that makes sense

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Dark Satanic Mills

Ref the misunderstanding regarding font colours used in this (and other threads). Please remember that Pixalo offers four different themes, one of which is a black one. If people format their posts with text of any important elements set to black they will be totally invisible to anyone using the black theme. Basically you are limiting your potential audience unless one of those people are kind enough to point this out to you.

That said, if black writing on a black background is so upsetting to any members then I would suggest rather than letting it annoy you, simple click away and go to another thread. This is what I do personally and it prevents high blood pressure.

As I am in a good mood I have edited the original post (this one time) to remove the font colour statements so that it will show correctly on all our themes. Hopefully this will help everyone relax and keep you all happy

Re: Dark Satanic Mills

How did the text become unreadable? I thought the black theme just showed fonts as white instead? I use the blue theme so wasn't aware of it but I do try and keep the themes in mind when doing a frame for my pictures (that is why when using a black border as I often do, I also include a thin coloured line to separate the picture appropriately)

Steve, just so I don't inadvertently do whatever caused John's text to look unreadable in the black theme, could you tell me what to avoid please?

Cheers,
Rob

When composing a post there is the facility to choose font style, size and colour "like this" When this is done it overrides the forum software's automatic choice... the problems come when a colour is chosen that matches (or comes close to matching) a forum colour scheme background, making the text extremely hard or impossible to read.

Regards,
Iain.

Rob,
The text was originally typed in Word and then pasted into the forum. This seems to have altered the formatting, and so rendered the text illegiable to those who view in black.

Just for reference, this happens if you are using the WYSIWYG message editor setting. It can be changed through UserCp>Edit Options > then scroll to the bottom of the screen and under Miscellaneous there is a drop down option box. I have mine set to 'Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls'.

John, I am very sorry for dragging your thread off topic, hopefully though it has been worthwhile
